Or you could listen to what is actually being said. The reason for the 10pm closing is to limit the amount of time people are down the pub and hopefully lessen their exposure to any potential virus floating about.

Trying to lower infection numbers while still keeping the hospitality businesses open and earning.

"And believe it should be putting far more resources into protecting the vulnerable and let the rest of us take our chances. "

Everyone can be vulnerable and everyone who gets infected, if they don't immediately quarantine the moment when they are infectious to others, may be the person who infects others who may die, or ultimately cause others to die, or suffer lifelong disabilities.

Certainly risk factors increase the risk but I can imagine that if you want the country to isolate all BAME and other vulnerable ethnic minorities, there would probably be uproar. Likewise, at what BMI or other measures, would people be classified as obese? Would huge bodybuilders be recompensed to isolate?

Seemingly healthy people may get mild initial symptoms but have long term organ and internal bodily damage. Many may not know that they have a raised blood pressure, for example either. People may die in years to come, due to the initial damage that this infection caused but it won't be on their death certificate, due to having become a chronic condition.

If you work from home you are making less contact with people compared to when you go to work. If you go home at 10pm instead of 1am, again you are limiting the time and contact you make with other people.

Limiting your time and contact with others reduces your probability of getting infected and / or reduces the probability of you infection others if you've had it.

So that's the purpose of these restrictions - not to lock people indoors, but to reduce the probability of transmission.

Of course some people do, just not everyone and that is clear from reading this thread, this is not about politics, I hate the toris and all they stand for, but this is about people dying and being hospitalised and about people with no symptoms spreading the virus !

no one is seriously suggesting that thevirus cannot infect anyone before 10pm and everyone knows that so why the silly comments to that effect.

what does change after 10pm is the number of pissed people milling around; not wearing masks and ignoring social distancing.

as you all well know; but of course that common sense does not apply to people who are denying there even is a virus or that is not going to effect them and that they dont give a shit about anyone else.

I actually think table service and closing early makes sense. Those that go out earlier will tend to eat which will stop them getting as d*unk, it will stop the drink at home getting ready, going out at 9pm and getting blathered and hooking up crew... sure we all did it when younger. It’s the young spreading the virus at the end of the day.

Lets hope there are no neighbours who have a grudge with the family, you might give them the justification to report you.

Perhaps his parents aren't fat or unhealthy, perhaps they would like to see him and are happy to take the small risk that it entails.

Yes it did, but one has to remember that different countries have different approaches or reactions within their respective Society make-up and how well they accept what their Govt's suggest for their overall safety and well being!

Look, it's not a case of who could've done better politically, than any other group or Party.

What we have had here since March is a global phenomenon not seen in our lifetime. Whoever was in charge in the UK has been placed in the unenviable position of being "damned for what they've done" but also "damned for what they haven't done!".

There's no text book on how to deal with this, no correct way nor incorrect way, but learning by as they go along.

I'd have thought that right from the beginning though, that Political Rivalries should have been put aside and a Collective approach be built up in order to move forward.

"Work from home then at 5pm go to pub and socialize and home at 10 ,the virus will also go to sleep then lol

If you work from home you are making less contact with people compared to when you go to work. If you go home at 10pm instead of 1am, again you are limiting the time and contact you make with other people.

Limiting your time and contact with others reduces your probability of getting infected and / or reduces the probability of you infection others if you've had it.

So that's the purpose of these restrictions - not to lock people indoors, but to reduce the probability of transmission."

Far too sensible for some on here mate.

"Or you could listen to what is actually being said. The reason for the 10pm closing is to limit the amount of time people are down the pub and hopefully lessen their exposure to any potential virus floating about.

Trying to lower infection numbers while still keeping the hospitality businesses open and earning."

And they are less likely to get pissed up and in bother and end up in A & E.

I said nothing whatsoever about a total lockdown

The op said the more d*unk people get, social distance will go out the window.

Untrue. The pub will have strict guidelines to follow (table service etc)

Once the pub closes these measures will be lost and it's highly unlikely that everyone will go home at 10pm.

People have lost faith in Boris and the government , his bumbling incoherent speeches and meaningless 3 word slogans don’t work. When he says ‘go home at 10’ people laugh and ignore him, his track record during this crisis has been pathetic , I guess there is only one solution, he has to resign

The op said the more d*unk people get, social distance will go out the window.

Untrue. The pub will have strict guidelines to follow (table service etc)

Once the pub closes these measures will be lost and it's highly unlikely that everyone will go home at 10pm. you have also said people wont go home at 10 what is your solution?

To not shut at 10 pm? is that your answer not to shut at 10? as i am confused by the question mark after your statement."

You asked for my solution which I posed as a question.

"I would have thought it was all obvious. The later it gets the more pissed people get and social distancing goes out of the window. I would have thought its a Ballance between keeping the R number down while still trying to keep some people in a job.

Yep I'm sure at 10 everyone will go home and go to bed.

Maybe not, what would you suggest?

Total lockdown is your preferred option - you would support this?

Why don't you try not inventing stuff people have never said?

What?

You have said people won’t go home at 10. I have asked what would you suggest and would you support a total lockdown .

People have lost faith in Boris and the government , his bumbling incoherent speeches and meaningless 3 word slogans don’t work. When he says ‘go home at 10’ people laugh and ignore him, his track record during this crisis has been pathetic , I guess there is only one solution, he has to resign No some do others want this to end so will follow the advice given. "

We will soon find out, let’s be honest, he has lost the respect of many people for various reasons , he is a lame duck , time for him to put country before himself and resign.

I know you didn’t say anything about a lockdown , and I certainly didn’t say you said anything about it - I asked if you are in favour of it though.

You don’t think people will go home at 10pm - so what’s an alternative to shutting at 10?

If subtle measures don’t work, is full lockdown the only alternative - and do you support it ?

I've said once before..dont shut at 10.At least in the pub it's a controlled environment.

I think another lockdown would cause too much damage economic ally.. I doubt very much if we will see another 6 month lockdown.

Boris was criticised for locking down to late last time so he is not going to make the same mistake twice. It is a win win situation for him. If the numbers go down then he can claim the credit, if the go up then he can say we didn't follow the rules and it has to be tighter.

If he didn't tighten the rules and the numbers go up he will be criticised again.

Well probably by people who never liked him in the 1st place, like some on here who like to politicize every announcement but never mention any other leaders who are doing exactly the same thing. Only have to look at the rules in scotland never see her mentioned though so yes lets be honest on here its just boris bashing.Of course he is not going to get everything right just like other leaders all over the world but overall i think the government has done its best under the circumstances looking after people by furlough helping by mortgage holidays, rates cuts etc but hey ho just my opinion.

What do you think of Test and Trace? What do you think of people not being able to get tests?

What do you think of Contracts for millions for PPE given to firms that don't have any history of supplying PPE? Or contracts for millions for PPE for a ltd that was only opened a week before?

Well if you want to take Italy as an example it has a similar population. The elderly make up 23.1% compared to 20.4% of the uk but when you add in the bame population the uk has 9% more aso stands to reason we have more deaths.

Public health policies for decades have all been failing to address many areas, it's a complex issue and yes some is personal responsibility but there are many other factors that contribute..

Flout the rules and then moan about it as they are then made even stricter, unfortunately some will never take responsibility of why that is ..... forget having a drink in the pub I’d much prefer the option of seeing my family again sometime in the next six months. If that means the rules get stricter to enable that, then so be it. I know where my priorities lie

This goes for us too

People don't have to agree with everything that is done to comply and can obviously criticise if they want to, I am not sure why you think people can't

I never said they couldn’t criticise. "

You asked is that a reason to criticise, yes it is if people think it is needed

"Boris was criticised for locking down to late last time so he is not going to make the same mistake twice. It is a win win situation for him. If the numbers go down then he can claim the credit, if the go up then he can say we didn't follow the rules and it has to be tighter.

If he didn't tighten the rules and the numbers go up he will be criticised again.

Agree

No matter what he / the government do there will always be those that will criticise and pick fault.

Having one of the worst death rates in Europe probably contributes to that.

.... is that any reason to now ignore / criticise steps they are being put in place to try and stop it getting even higher.

There really is no appeasing some individuals and they will moan for morning sake.

If you think the measures are not going to be effective, you have every right to criticise.

Wearing masks imho is a sensible precaution.

Closing pubs at 10, I think Is flawed.

If you choose to flout the rules..well that's your choice.

Flout the rules and then moan about it as they are then made even stricter, unfortunately some will never take responsibility of why that is ..... forget having a drink in the pub I’d much prefer the option of seeing my family again sometime in the next six months. The whole point is if you think the rules are going to make any difference or not.

who knows until they try, but personally I think where drink is involved, social distancing goes out of the window so probably not unless everyone stays sober.

I know he has to get the economy going and obviously try and keep business going but I can see them closing again if people take no notice of the guidelines

market rasen

I was out Saturday night in lincoln. People do tend to be mostly sober still at 10. But after 11/12 it’s a different ball game. People just forget to socially distance or are too d*unk to know what they are doing. Chip shops and kebab shops are a free for all. Taxi queues are a free for all.

Yes some people may go out earlier but let’s face it most won’t as they can’t as they may work in the day or have childcare in the day. During the week realistically people will probably not go out and if they do it will only be a few hours.

I’m pleased to see that it makes sense why they are doing this to the majority of people .

You said no matter what the gmnt do..people will always criticise.

We have one of the worst death rates in Europe and we could be here all day listing the cock ups, blunders, corruption and incompetence which has gone on

If people wanna say they are doing their best, be my guest but dont expect everyone to agree.

That's the whole point of a forum.
