Suing the NHS and parking charges

How do people feel about the following.
Suing the NHS. In 2018 the NHS paid out £2.4bn in compensation (Source The BMJ)
Parking Charges at hospitals. In 2018 the NHS raised £250m in parking charges (Source The Press Association)
My thoughts are that while mistakes and clinical negligence should be investigated and those responsible held accountable throwing money at people who have suffered is not always the answer.
With regard to parking charges while some people are unfairly hit and there needs to be a system to cover free and heavily discounted parking, especially for staff, the vast majority can afford it and I for one would happily pay more.
Thoughts please....

My understanding is that parking charges for NHS workers have been scrapped for now.
Unfortunately the NHS hasn't perhaps been funded adequately and the parking charges have offset some of that cost.
I'm sure they would happily scrap the charges if they could afford to. |

As far as I could see from the report that was hospital trusts income from car parks. Either ones they run or income from grounds rented to third party operators. |

I agree. I think as a nation we need to look at how much we are willing to spend to create a first class NHS
I'm sure they would happily scrap the charges if they could afford to."

As far as I'm aware, the car parking is outsourced. Suing whoever runs the car park enforcement would be more appropriate?

I think when NHS hospitals and councils let private companies run their car parks, vending machines , cleaning etc you have to question they need to exist anymore. Half privatised is the worse possible position, you end up with two tiers of staff and no accountability for quality |

Hospitals in Wales are not allowed to charge for parking. And it's a nightmare trying to park. When they were charging £1 for three hours or whatever it was it was so much better.

If a family loses its breadwinner through negligence there should be recompense, they shouldn't be on the streets etc..
Granted there will always be those who seek to exploit..

It all kinda made me laugh on Thursday when all the neighbour's were out applauding the nhs...the one banging the pan loudest had sued them for thousands  |

I wad told that if it's a private company and not council issued fines, to ignore them, but not sure if they can arrange bailiffs to pay you a visit. The DVLA are implicit by providing your details (for a fee of course) so not sure if you can still ignore their demands |

The car parks are run privately and when you use the car park you enter into a contract of conditions.
If you get a PCN you will have to pay unless you can show them a reason that you should not but to be honest they are not interested.

‘Throwing money at people’ is not just giving recompense for a mistake, but to help fund any necessary treatment not funded by the NHS, needing specialised equipment, or for house alterations. For example, if a labour and delivery had been mismanaged causing severe brain damage to a child, that money could make life more bearable.
With parking: I don’t think it’s right to charge staff and patients whom are receiving regular treatment. Perhaps some sort of discount should be given, as some charges will still need to be applied, if only to dissuade non hospital users.

It'll be partly income for the hospital, but also parking management to ensure there is a regular swap over of cars. Pricing, that's up to the hospital.
Same as short stay in town centre car parks are more expensive than slightly more out of town but long stay car parks. Short stay town center easier for walking, therefore very popular, long stay, more of a walk. Pricing will be reviewed each year and goes hand in hand with their sustainable travel i.e. buses, park and ride and other initiatives. There's a balance.
I have to agree that private parking services are utter bastards, had many a run in on a professional basis with them.

I used to work as a legal secretary and dealt with, amongst other things, personal injury claims which sometimes involved suing Doctors/Consultants/NHS Trusts for medical negligence.
I can tell you that it is not a way to get easy money for victims. Hospital Trusts have their own legal teams who very robustly and aggressively defend their staff at all costs, regardless of what evidence you have that proves their was negligence. Trying to obtain expert reports from other qualified Doctors stating that the injuries someone is left with is as a result of negligence of another medical professional was extremely hard, they closed ranks and didn’t like “dobbing” someone in it.
However, there are people out there who are left in constant excruciating pain, or in need of further invasive corrective surgery as a result of a medical fuck up.
It is a lengthy, expensive legal process and not something that is undertaken on a whim to try and make a quick buck.

I think some cases need monetary compensation. Only where someone will need to pay out for a care package, home alterations or equipment as a direct result of medical negligence.
