I see this word banded about a lot on here. It seems that...

There are some people on here who accuse others for being trolls just for disagreeing with them, but I think most of the forum posters here know exactly when someone is behaving as above. |

I called someone a troll today.
I very rarely use this word and have done so on a recent thread. At the time I did see the comment in question being a deliberate attempt to veer the original topic (which was initially very cheery) into something quite negative.
I was enjoying the openness of people saying how they coped and willingness to answer any queries, as well as people who said they enjoyed the celebratory meals. I found it refreshing and was really enjoying what I read.
Then a gloomy comment popped up.
I know that threads can veer off course, and I never comment on it when it does. It's kind of organic, I guess. However, this time I could see it was going to go to a pretty negative place.
Well, that's my explaination....

When i first moved into my flat I felt like the troll from Billy goats gruff cos no one was above me or next door n i was still quite grumpy so every time someone walked up my stairs id be grrrrrr "whose that stomping up my stairs?" Ok ok ok I'm still grumpy now I know. xxx |

It does make me wonder sometimes. People who throw spanners in the works like this may think that they are witty,insightful, clever and superior.
However, there is a flip side to this.
They can be seen as conniving, manipulative and mean.
Hell, who wants to spend time playing with that?

And this is why I tend to leave such comments and threads that go this way to their own devices. I may be tangential in my own thinking but there is usually a rationale to it; and the deliberately inflammatory ones are usually pretty obvious. |

Originally troll was a verb not a noun. It meant to troll some bait like in fishing hoping for a bite. Usually posting something deliberately provocative to stir up some response; anything from rangers/celtic to star wars/ star trek
The spelling was too close to the trolls in scandanavian legend and so people started talking about deliberately nasty and hurtful comments designed to hurt or disgust people.
30 years online and I have trolled and been trolled.
