This is appalling, food safety and animal welfare standards have long been a concern in the EU, when will Brussels get a grip? :

Think they had an outbreak of Bird Flu in a Southern Russian poultry farm as well last week.
No matter which country it is, everyone has to be on their guard to make sure that the very best of food hygiene is practiced. |

I know its not perfect but still find it strange that people who were so against chlorinated chicken have nothing to say apart from get over it we have left even though we are still buying from them.
I guess the chlorine and animal warefare was not really their main concern.  |

If the Polish chicken doesn't meet standards then prosecute the producers. If it does meet standards then the standards aren't high enough. Why did the government refuse to keep existing standards as a minimum if their only intention is to improve on them in the future?
That chlorine washing should not be welcome here isn't just a public health issue, it's a massive animal welfare issue too. I don't want to eat chicken that has spent it's whole life swimming it the excrement and disease of the rest of the flock. They are then processed in conditions that haven't been introduced to 19th century hygiene yet. No wonder they have to bleach it. It's also no surprise that those conditions led to massive covid outbreaks among the people who work in the plants.
Add to that the hormones that get injected which accelerate growth beyond the limits of the leg muscles, so they can't support their own body weight, and even the feathers can't grow fast enough to cover the bird.
Why would you want to enable standards to be reduced to those levels? |

You do understand that less than 10% of american chicken is processed this way but that is deviating from the point.
People on here have openly opposed buying chicken from them but have no opinion when it comes to eu food standards.The standard reply is you are obsessed with the eu, why do you care about the eu we have left the eu for the simple reason unlike you they think everything in the eu is perfect and should not be criticized. |

I've explicitly said the opposite of that. The EU isn't perfect, of course things can be improved. That applies to everything. Introducing a loophole to allow things to be made worse for the right price is not a good idea for anything.
Even if only 10% of US chicken is produced that way (I have no reason to doubt your figures) that's a fuckload of chicken that they want to sell over here, and those conditions for the 10% are perfectly legal over there.
I posted a link from the Byline Times last year which included salmonella stats from the US. A small outbreak in Poland is news over here. It's expected over there. If you don't like a little bit of salmonella now then you won't like the by-products that come with US meat if it makes it over here.

Washing food in chlorine is something that has been going on in this country and the EU. for years. It's nothing new. I don't know enough about whether chicken is in this country but lettuce and much of salad products are. |

Washing food in chlorine is something that has been going on in this country and the EU. for years. It's nothing new. I don't know enough about whether chicken is in this country but lettuce and much of salad products are."
Yes, some salad is washed in chlorine either at the production line or in the restaurant itself. I've done it myself many times. If we don't then you can have a choice between eating pesticides or caterpillars with your radicchio. The reason we don't do it with our chicken is because our farm and abbatoir standards mean that we don't have to. |

The quality of the food in UK is one of the lowest if not the worst in the entire world, America may be a contender, I’ve never been there. If you have immigrant colleagues or friends from all over the world just ask them what their opinion is regarding food here. Ask them for an honest opinion and tell them that you are prepared for any answer. You will be surprised. |

Perceptions of our food quality are different to perceptions of our food hygiene. A lot of our ingredients can't be produced here because of climate but there's more to our food than beans on toast, spuds and cabbage. If the food you see is poor quality then that's more a reflection on the food you are looking at. There's plenty of quality if you look for it and you don't have to spend a fortune on wagyu beef to get it. |

I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say the quality of the food? Are you suggesting food here, the production and quality is sub standard to other countries? Maybe the way it is cooked? Which is different to quality. Or the types of food we eat? I can see Yorkshire pudding and haggis might not appeal to everyone, but that doesn't mean the quality is bad, just not to their taste. |

Perceptions of our food quality are different to perceptions of our food hygiene. A lot of our ingredients can't be produced here because of climate but there's more to our food than beans on toast, spuds and cabbage. If the food you see is poor quality then that's more a reflection on the food you are looking at. There's plenty of quality if you look for it and you don't have to spend a fortune on wagyu beef to get it. "
I know you can find anything if you look around(almost). I don’t buy my meat in Tesco. However that doesn’t reflect what the majority of the population does or what they have been offered. Like it or not majority of the brits are doing their shopping at the supermarket not at the local farm shop. Been to the markets and wasn’t very impressed by the offer. Btw, tell me where I can buy a real chicken in this country, maybe you know? On the continent we just go to the market.... |

A lot of our ingredients can't be produced here because of climate but there's more to our food than beans on toast, spuds and cabbage. If the food you see is poor quality then that's more a reflection on the food you are looking at. There's plenty of quality if you look for it and you don't have to spend a fortune on wagyu beef to get it.

Now I understand. You're comparing mass produced food for the supermarket.
Not sure about where you live, but we have many butchers supplying locally produced meat, farm shops providing locally produced meat and vegetables, some fruits. I prefer and tend to use these over the supermarkets. To quote a well known band, the public gets what the public wants.
People want the convenience of buying everything under one roof, so the supermarket takes advantage of that.
That's not quite the same as saying the quality of all food in the UK is crap. |

I am not talking about the way is cooked , I am talking about the raw products. Haggis is barely an unusual food, you can find it all over Europe under one name or another. Continental Europeans tend to eat everything from animals. The meat is the one that doesn’t have much taste and texture,poultry the same. Vegetables, I guess due to the price war between companies you have to accept the lowest quality possible. |

I didn’t say that you can not find decent food in UK. And I didn’t say that all the UK food is crap. But supermarket food is usually crap and supermarkets are the place of choice for majority of British.To be more exact, supermarket food in UK is of a lesser quality than supermarket food in other countries. You do have few butchers and farm shops however their products are usually of a much lesser quality compared with what you would expect on the continent. About British fruits and veggies, let’s not talk about them. |

Disagree. If you are only prepared to shop in supermarkets or at street markets that might be true, but if like I do you can buy straight from the farmer/producer then you can buy the best quality at a reasonable price.
But I wouldn't disagree with you where the supervision are concerned. If you buy from a bakery the bread is far better than from the supermarket. But that's down to choice. It's changing people's perceptions. Shop local. Buy local! |

Unfortunately the high street has changed. Only the largest stores can afford the rent and a lot of those are dropping by the wayside. Out of town supermarkets and retail outlets have gradually killed the high street. Greengrocers, butchers, independent bakery, florists etc have all have been killed of by the large supermarket.
The last year has changed some people's perceptions and I think more are buying local from independent shops. It could be a reset. But I suspect when things, if things return to 'normality' then so will people's habits. |

If the food you see is poor quality then that's more a reflection on the food you are looking at. There's plenty of quality if you look for it and you don't have to spend a fortune on wagyu beef to get it.
I know you can find anything if you look around(almost). I don’t buy my meat in Tesco. However that doesn’t reflect what the majority of the population does or what they have been offered. Like it or not majority of the brits are doing their shopping at the supermarket not at the local farm shop. Been to the markets and wasn’t very impressed by the offer. Specifically these guys have the answer. British Meat Processors Association (BMPA)
Their own report clearly points to a cancer link and yet they are not keen on the public knowing.
80% of nitrates come from vegetables but a lot is natural. It’s when used in the curing process that it becomes a problem. .
Who knew celery treatment was the worse culprit?

I think you are getting mixed up. The ban on beef was due to BSE not foot and mouth. I was told by a Min of Ag vet that BSE was on the continent, after all a lot of animal feed was imported, but it was passed off as rabies, hence they were able to get round the ban.
Red meat has always been linked to cancer.
It does make me laugh, that a lot of the information on UK animal welfare dates from the 70's and isn't current. |

Actually, it's not. Most European countries on that list clear a score of 80. Seven on that list cleared 90 along with the UK. Might not be great but definitely not atrocious. I've double-checked this time.

That applies to all food production, foreign and domestic.
We don't need the hypocritical, unenforced and artificially skewed market of the Brussels cabal to deal with that, in fact they make it worse. |

It's very easy to say that, but if our market is flooded with cheap, low quality imports, the local producers will struggle to compete and many will go out of business. It will become a lot harder and more expensive to buy quality British produce.
I'm not making a trite political statement, but pointing out my genuine concerns, based on economic facts and international president.
The wealthy will continue to eat healthy, organic free range British chickens and eggs.... whereas those on a tight budget will be forced to eat crap! |

It all starts with education as others have said. If we had cooking classes in schools, more of a Jamie Oliver approach if you like, then however poor they are people wouldn't eat badly made crap.
My evidence for this is France, similar disposable incomes but they spend twice as much as us per head on food. |

Agreed! I'm an ex-chef so I won't argue on that. It still won't change the economic argument though market forces dictate that a glut of cheap imports will undercut our producers. Till now whilst hindered by some aspects of our EU partnership, we have also been protected by it against global economic rivals.
It's very difficult to see how the government can protect local producers, maintain current welfare and hygiene standards, and procure the favourable trade deals we now desperately need.....
Ps It is awesome to be able to have firm constructive discourse on such a contentious issue without it degenerating into ranting and name calling!

They must be huge chickens if they are filled with steroids and growth hormones! Bigger than turkeys and swans.
I pop into these posts for the comedic value. So many people clearly have absolutely no idea of what they are actually talking about, as I've said previously. But then, that's what it says on the internet. Rather than from people who work in the industry.
The EU hasn't protected us from anything. British farming practices, including welfare have always been ahead of European ones, anyway. Everything has been traceable for many years, back to the farm it came from.
What many people don't realise is that if a chicken, cow, sheep or pig isn't kept in good health and conditions it won't produce, eggs, milk or meat. I wouldn't disagree that there were problems within the industry many years ago but with the scrutiny the industry faces this changed.
As someone else pointed out, if you don't agree with buying chicken the size of a cow, don't buy it. I wonder what KFC and others will do with the lack of drumsticks? With chickens that size they wouldn't be able to walk and the legs would wither. No shortage in your bucket.
Don't forget many salad leaves etc are washed in bleach and have been done so in this country and the EU for many years. Diluted to kill off germs etc. So you are already eating products that have been washed in it. Nothing new. |

Part of the deal the US is pushing for is to not to have country of origin labelling so how will you know?
They know their chicken is shit so don’t want it advertised. Also if it’s used in ready meal production again how do you know ?
Remember in the USA the burden is on the consumer to prove a food is unsafe not on the producer to prove it’s safe.
They have rules but the rules favour Pharma and big food producers. They pay for the senators to run for election. |
