Can they stop the virus in china?

Genuinely, I don't know I'm not a disease control expert.
15 dead people seems like a very small fraction of the world population compared to how many people die on the world's roads, from domestic violence, knife crime, heart disease, cancer etc not to mention war. |

Its 15 now but can easily rise to 30 by tomorrow. I think people are more worried about it spreading as a pandemic. Cant relly compare that to people dying in road accidents as the tide can turn very quickly. |

I dont think there is anything we can do other than keep up with our own hygiene. Wash hands, cover mouth etc. I was living on the Piccadilly line near Heathrow when the Ebola epidemic hit. Two of the confirmed UK Ebola cases passed right through my yard without me knowing. Same with the Norovirus. Had two or three co-workers and a mate get struck down with that. Its not worth panicking over untill theres actual cuase. |

People need to understand the reason why the authorities are panicking.
This thing can jump species like nothing else, it can seemingly find a host wherever it desires.
It's rare some think it might be a human made virus!!! |

It's a virus, so can readily mutate. I think at present it's likely to be a bigger problem in China than here and it's possible that more could get it from animals there.
With luck, it will be contained and won't spread much, nor get chance to mutate. But it could jump from animals again to China in future, if it does mutate, especially if it becomes more easily transmissable.
Would you fly to China now? Its got a very low infection rate but I'd probably be too chicken and cancel my flights. It's certainly a higher risk to catch it there atm |

As to death's, this is china, will be alot more than that, but with media lock down....
Still, as others have said, flu kills, this is no different (unless as above)

It said on the news that this country said there is no fear from this virus. If it comes here we, as a country, can manage it - have the means to prevent or control. Based on that WHY arent WE as a country helping prevent further deaths in another country! Are we allowing this illness and deaths to continue and spread? |

Actually I do, we have a virus scare on a near yearly basis. Give it a month or 2 and everyone would have forgot about it |

The requirements for a pandemic (a disease that has spread globally) are pretty simple:
1. It must be antigenically novel i.e. it's a new virus to which there has been no exposure previously and, therefore, no immunity exists in the general population.
2. It must cause severe disease. This can include a severe inflammatory response which affects individuals without any pre-exisiting co-morbidities i.e. they are young and otherwise healthy.
3. It must transmit easily from human to human.
If you want to really shake things up, add in:
A relatively long incubation period during which an infected individual, who does not display symptoms, can shed the virus and transmit it to others.
A virus that only requires a low number of viral units to cause infection i.e. it is highly infective.
A virus that does not rapidly degrade in the environment e.g. on surfaces, in the air.
A virus that is capable of antigenic drift allowing it to come back for a second strike on those individuals who developed initial immunity. This, also, makes the development of a vaccine difficult.
A virus that can jump to a second, or third, animal species creating an infective reservoir. |

A local newspaper is running a story about a mum telling people not to worry about the coronavirus as her son had it here back in December. He was treated in Alderhey.
Coronavirus is an umbrella term.
I know it's 'sensational news' and I feel for anyone that is trapped or directly suffering. |

These are symptoms of many viruses. If I had them I wouldn't immediately think I had corona virus. |

That is right as other viruses have the same so yes it is hard to know if you have this virus or not. |

As was pointed out on TV this morning, more people have died from flu this winter than Coronavirus. It's probably nasty if you're old or your immune system is compromised but it seems most are getting over it. |

It's just like SARS, Ebola, swine flu and bird flu. Big scares if you ask me.
I remember when everyone was being diagnosed with swine flu by unqualified professionals on a helpline with a tick list. |
