from a complete technology numpty 
i've been thinking (a dangerous activity i know) and was wondering if there is any way to take advantage of the all you can eat data allowance i get on my mobile phone.
is there any way i can hook it up to my laptop instead of a dongle??
i know it is possible to use mobile phones for internet access in conjunction with laptops, but will i get charged separately for this or will is come out of my free allowance??
its a sony ericsson xperia arc if that makes any difference.
hoping you can help, and seriously hoping i understand any advice given - simple instructions please for a girl who can crash anything with digital capabilities!  |

3g Watchdog is a good one - you install it then set up your monthly limit and it gives you a nifty little icon on your screen that tells you quickly if your within, close to or over your data allowance - most networks will send you a warning if your close to the limit as well
Remember that when using data on your mobile (web browsing, facebook or youtube for instance) it tends to be optimised for mobile use and so wont use as much data but accessing the same sites from a laptop they will be full fat versions that will very quickly eat up your allowance |

and i get all you can eat with no limits data allowance from the much maligned three network, so i can surf and chat to my hearts content! |

That will probably be in the fine print, sometimes the penalty for using too much bandwidth is bringing your internet connection speed down to "dial up" speed, ironically enough. |

3 are the only network to offer all you can eat as a genuine package
BUT Please check whether your package allows tethering ( attaching your phone to a PC)
I'm with Giffgaff and they specifically say tethering is not allowed  |

3 say you are not allowed to use tethering BUT as it stands they are not able to tell that a tethered phone is relaying data to an external device, so to them your smartphone is devouring the data. This may change soon but atm If your on 3 go for it! |

Partially true about GiffGaff, if you buy a Gigabag, its intended for data only and for using your sim in a tehered mobile, dongle, or tablet device
(I am with Giffgaff aswell and use a sim exclusivley fith Gigabags formy dongle)

i checked with three and the techie guy checked and said no problem, just to download the sony ericsson companion to do it all through, install, then plug my phone in with the usb thingie and it would do it all for me!
have to say that to a total tech numpty like me this is very close to magic! |
