By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

we have a pub that is over 400 years old, been here four and half years now and although never seen or heard anything to prove it is haunted, we have had a few strange happenings.

recently though, around this time of the morning (between 1 & 2 a.m.) after we have closed and gone upstairs to the flat above, there will, on occasion be a sudden strong smell of toast !! then it will go as quick as it came.

so, the question is, does anyone know why we have suddenly started to get the smell of toast ??

and no, we have not left the toaster on or had any toast ourselves

no, but we dont do anything with toast in the kitchen anyway, and we are more of a drinking pub so only do bar food at lunchtimes, no evening food

If you have a camcorder leave it running in the area you want while you are downstairs working in the pub and see if anything happens when you watch it back.

sorry to put a damper on the humour , but if I were you id have the pubs electrics looked at , the smell your describing is often one which accompanies wiring issues and air conditioning equipment , as most wiring runs above the ceiling frission from sparking exposed wiring can cause the smell described , better be safe than sorry .

I would have thought if it was 400 years old there be damp somewhere even if it is behind false walls. Do you know the history of the pub out of interest. If you goggle station hotel Dudley it might give you a idea of what went on in pubs in years gone by

Wow .... let us know what happens.

It's kind of cool to think that a post in a swingers forum stopped your pub being burned to the ground or even worse.... lives lost ...eeeek!

Let us know if it does turn out to be the wiring x

little house on the praire

When i first moved into this house where an old lady had died. I could smell oranges, all the while i could smell them. I mentioned it to her daughter and apparently they where her favourite fruit. Had a few weird things happen when i first moved in but after i had been here a couple of years it all stopped

thanks for the interest granny, and yes it would be amazing (not one to report to the daily mail if it is though lol)

so, just to update all you nice peeps on here, i have phoned my electrician and told him of my worries, and he assures me not to panic too much as only recently had my annual inspection that threw up no major problems.

however, he is coming to have a good snoop round monday morning to see if anything looks amiss.

will keep you informed

Three things I just read .....

If your engine has problems, it might provide a certain kind of smell. Each smell can equate to specific problems in your engine. A burning engine smell like burned toast, which often emits a sharp, light odor, may be due to the insulation of your car burning or an electrical short.

1. Re: Smell disorder? Is it serious?

It's an olfactory hallucination. More specifically, dysosmia. It can be caused by a physical problem, or mental.

Just to repeat what percy said. The smell of burnt toast is essentially a hallucination that may precede a certain type of seizure (partial complex aka temporal lobe seizure).

If a susceptible person is exposed to the smell of burnt toast, it does not trigger a seizure.

Just don't drive your car while you are hallucinating about having a seizure...

Apologies to Kurt Cobain .....

SMELLS LIKE FRESH TOAST

Load up toasters - bring your butter

It's fun to toast bread and to sniff it

It’s over cooked and over browned

There it is again it brings us down.....

Hello, hello, hello, sniff toast?

Hello, hello, hello, smell toast?

Hello, hello, hello, dat toast?

Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's more smelly

Here we are now now full of Baileys

I feel stupid and contagious

Here it is now, trying to brain us

A muffino an albino

A bagellino , a crumpetino

Yeah, hey, yay

It’s worse when it is in my head

The pub is quiet, the kids in bed

It’s two a.m no one’s around

And then it coMes the freaky sound

Hello, hello, hello, sniff toast?

Hello, hello, hello, smell toast?

Hello, hello, hello, dat toast?

Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's more smelly

Here we are now now full of Baileys

I feel stupid and contagious

Here it is now, trying to brain us

A muffino an albino

A bagellino , a crumpetino

Yeah, hey, yay

And I forget just why I taste

Oh yeah, I guess it makes me sniff

I found it hard, it's hard to find

Where’s the fucking toast? Oh never mind

Hello, hello, hello, sniff toast?

Hello, hello, hello, smell toast?

Hello, hello, hello, dat toast?

Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's more smelly

Here we are now now full of Baileys

I feel stupid and contagious

Here it is now, trying to brain us

A muffino an albino

A bagellino , a crumpetino

Yeah, hey, yay

A denial, a denial

A denial, a denial

A denial, a denial

A denial, a denial

A denial

all interested parties.

had electricians (toast busters) looking into every nook & cranny (or crook & nanny) and they found nothing wrong at all over the last 2 days.

no toast smell while they were here either (typical) but soon as they gone, guess what ?? yep, get the occasional whiff of bloody toast.

And, this has now been joined by the smell of flowers in different places too

oh well, looks like we gotta live with it... seems we are haunted

get a medium in...maybe make a night of it and get paying punters in to speak to them too! that way even if they can't connect to your toast loving ghost you have something to pull the customers in!

I live in quite a new house on a estate that has been built on a old hospital site that I used to work at. When my daughter first started walking she often went into the kitchen and waved or talked to someone by the rear door when no one was there. My dogs used to do stare at the same door at different times. One of my old colleges came round and when mentioned they said what you expect when your house is on the old morgue.
