So wtf is that all about ?

She blogs that she would love to be kissing her 20 year son with tongues , but it’s seen as being illegal . Her son it seems is not so keen ...

Now I’m sure it was said with a bit of tongue in cheek ( ) , but how must her son feel about this kind of outburst ?

The other woman was saying how she felt sad about her lad growing up and not wanting to kiss her anymore . That’s an innocent comment . When Emma chipped in with how she would love to kiss her son with tongues but it’s seen as illegal , it’s simply inappropriate and creepy . The fact that she had the thought , and put it out there on record is wrong in every level , and I don’t care who’s granddaughter she is !

Well ...... it's good to see that the 'intelligent' 'educated' 'rich' and 'cultured' make awful mistakes and are highly embarrassing parents.

I don't think she meant it how it sounded but what a hideous metaphor to choose....... i'd DO him with tongues if I could.........

There are plenty of sick things said in this world , which unfortunately some people will find funny . That doesn’t make it funny .

So to say it was funny as evidenced by the reaction of the interviewer doesn’t mean it is does it ?

Her son certainly doesn't think so .

Even the loose women panel said it would be a completely different story if a dad said it about his daughter . And furthermore the backlash from viewers who thought the loose women were supporting the comment by saying it was said in jest , shows that any reasoned person see it as creepy and wrong .

I’m sorry I can’t see it the same way as you do , but if I was her son , and had to put up with that kind of comment in the media , I would be fuming .

In chinese, the tone of the words is essential to their definition. This is not the case in english where tones are used more broadly to denote meanings such as saracsm, hyperbole and irony. It is a sad state of affairs that people want to degrade the english language down to just literal meanings and kill its richness. If anyone felt these comments were meant to be literally, then the problem is your ears and not her words. Hyperbole is funny, this was hyperbole. Everytime someone says some hyperbole, there is always a brigade of morons trying to get offended by it and take it literally. It's beneath you to go along with them, others I'm not surprised to see adding the chorus of fake outrage.

I grew up with comedians such as Bernard Manning doing tours , and it’s pretty hard to offend me .

I understand what hyperbole is too , and I’d be interested to see where one draws the line between that and what’s actually wrong on every level .

If you are a 20 year old lad who’s got a famous Mum , and she says she would love to kiss you using tongues but can’t as it’s illegal , then thats not in the slightest bit funny for him is it ? She may ( and others like you will ) say it’s hyperbole , but many more ( including me )will say it’s simply wrong , crass , and childish at best .

It’s a joke. Clearly a joke. Will everyone find it funny? No, because you can’t say that about any joke. Who cares if her son is embarrassed? I’m sure he’ll live.

WTF = What the Fuck.

I was trying to make the point that there is no such thing as protective custody for children - they might be fostered, or taken into care, but actually, in a case where a parent offers a genuine risk to a child (as opposed to a bad taste joke) the most likely tool to be used is an order preventing the parent from having contact with the child.

Both your post, and a post in a similar vein on this thread resort to insult. Such ad hominem means that you don't have to add valuable points but just insult those that don't want to pass something off as a joke.

You might want to note that those who think Emma Freud made a faux pas - don't claim to be outraged by it or offended by it and I haven't seen any of them waving the Daily Mail.

And what is more in their favour, I haven't seen any of them hurl insults at those who want to pass it of as figurative language.

"Such ad hominem means that you don't have to add valuable points but just insult those that don't want to pass something off as a joke."

Just, by the by: if one were to say, “You are an idiot, therefore your point is wrong,” that would be an ‘ad hominem’ argument. ‘Ad hominem’ refers to the fallacy of pointing out flaws in the person defeats unrelated points.

.

It is not an ‘ad hominem’ argument to reproach the reactions of others when it is those actions that are the point of contention. It is not an ‘ad hominem’ argument if one were to say, “Your point is wrong, and also you are an idiot.”

Also by the by, people don’t get to decide whether something is a joke. It’s not a matter of opinion. That it was a joke is an indisputable fact. Whether someone thinks it is a good joke is a matter of taste. Whether someone thinks that a son being embarrassed by his mother is worthy of comment, let alone outrage, is just a staggering lack of any sense of proportionality.

Funnily enough the embarrassment of the son was part of the wider context. Her whole point was that children hit an age where they start to push you away because they are more worried about what others think, than whether they actually want a hug. She was saying you need to push past this point because children always need affection from their parents.

It's a valid point of view and it was a funny joke, well delivered. Her son needs to stop being such a pussy and give his mum a kiss... on the cheek.

Trump was very much making 'look at my daughter everyone she's really sexy' type comments.

Thats not the end of the world either but it's not the same as what Emma Freud did.
