Has anyone done this lately NOT through their insurance company? Who did you use? And was it a rip off?

We have a local specialist who does it at a fraction of the cost of the larger companies.

It’s always worth shopping about as the price seems to differ a lot

You would be better off claiming in you’re insurance and then paying the slightly higher premium next year.

If you go private they will charge you over the top, insurance companies pay a fraction of what you would to the windscreen company.

Insurance may not pay out if it’s not broken.

Might be an idea to take the car to an auto electrician first as it may be an easy fix

It’s probably a loose connection on the heater element, it’s not a big job to take the internal facia’s off around the screen, when you next take it for a service ask their technician to check the connections, if it’s possible they may be able to solder or if it’s the element then you will know, cold weather nearly outa the way so maybe no need to rush and who knows you might even be lucky and get a broken screen which the insurance co will cover, I’ve had mine cracked 3 times in 2 years on motorways and insurance covered each time which is a good job as the heated screen for mine is £850 a go.

I got a mahoosive stone chip on the M6 yesterday... saw the fucker coming from the other side and there was nothing I could do. Fortunately it’s right at the bottom of the windscreen but I’m not sure if it’s too big to be filled or whether it’s going to be a replacement windscreen.

Has anyone successfully filled one before?!

I got a huge stone chip coming back up the M5 from a trip to Exeter , started as a big chip and thought got away with it, however when I went over a pothole the chip became a small crack and every bump it got bigger and bigger until it finally went all the way across, you might just get lucky tho and it won’t spread to a crack

Yeah I thought I’d see if someone can fill it. I should really go today but it seems Autoglass want you just to make an appointment and I think they come out to you. I’m pretty sure it won’t be cheap. I think I have cover on my insurance but I need to go dig that out.

We did ours through insurance. Screen was heated with rain sensors etc. Auto glass guy said it would be at £600 to have it done as a private job.

Durham Tees

If it is the rear screen, check the wiring. If a big bunch of wires for the lights and rear screen heater go from the main car body into the tailgate, bunched together in a rubber sleeve, they sometimes break and cause faults due to the opening and closing over years. I had a recurring tail light problem and got a friend to cut out each wire, one by one, then solder in a new one. Not had any problems since.

Ours was replaced because one side stopped working (jag but I believe made by ford!) auto glass said the crack that mysteriously appeared couldn’t be repaired.

Changed windscreen loads of times. Always through insurance doesnt affect no claims. Only 60 excess. Much better than trying to find 600
