I've only discovered I like them since last year and only ever eaten them cold. I'm scared if I try them warm with cream etc that I'll pop! I'm already having too many!

In antiquity they used to have meat, such as mutton, maybe beef - goose in the north of the UK, plus fruit and spices.

I think I prefer our current versions.

Pigeon often. I’ve had them with pigeon. Bloody yum (still peel the pastry off though)
