Do you find you work more productively with silence as your backdrop or do you stick music/ movie noise in the background?

I find I struggle to concentrate unless I have background noise on.

I need background noise but sometimes the silence can be peaceful.

I usually stick a movie I've watched dozens of times on. It's noise, its familiar, I don't need to concentrate on it so I can focus on the work at hand.

I need music most of the time just to spur me on through the utter tedium of my job. It's like, I'll listen to such and such album then that'll be another 50 minutes down ...

Find it depends what I am working on. Generally I find a bit of noise useful but if I have to make the grey matter reallly work then I have to turn everything else off.

Silence as I have to really concentrate. Mistakes have proven to be costly..

Does it feel tedious?

Music and headphones when I worked at home. If I was writing a load of emails I preferred silence so I could concentrate.

No, because only part of my work is at home and I love what I do. Also, it's the only time I get peace and quiet in our house!

If it was day in day out sat in silence at a computer then I think I'd find it very tedious.

I prefer the quiet, unless I'm not working, and then some good quality vibes are essential...

Although I'd love to, don't work from home but prefer peace and quiet when cooking or diying, does that count?

I've found myself using my customers playlists to kickstart the artistic juices when I work on their imagery.

Have to be careful to make it something bland. If i stick the radio/podcasts on or something that really demands listening to then I either listen to it intently and don't work, or dont listen at all and get pissed off that I missed it.

Who said blokes cant multi task? Oh yes, me!

With my windows open listening to the birds twittering and the babbling water in the stream nearby ... then I wake up and have to get on with my work and put some music on!

Silence more often than not. But sometimes I feel the need for music.

Depends on the task, sometimes music on, but I (mr) prefer it quiet for concentration.

Marc prefers silence. If I talk too much or have music on I get a look like this....

Background noise for me. I hate silence. It unnerves me.

Exactly this for me too. The silence properly distracts me.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I have tinnitus and really can't concentrate if there isn't some noise around.

I work with R4 on and only turn it off for interviews and numerical analysis work. Music can be too emotional to have on in the background.
