Question for the PETROL HEADS!

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

OK! I have bought a new car (picking up Monday). Now the car is a Vauxhall Adam and the reg starts with DK64. So we can say it's built in 2014.

HOWEVER MY QUESTION IS! I really want to get a private reg for it - do I need to include the 64 on the reg? Is that a legal requirement? Could I add 14 on the reg instead?

Thanks!

Any reg plate that is the same or younger than the original is allowed

Same but older

However it's not it's age you need to disguise you could perhaps get a fiberglass over body shell to hide the Vauxhall badge , and the car

You can't make a vehicle seem newer than it is with a private plate,so 14 would be fine if you were using the standard numberplate format of AB12 CDE

Perfect! Thanks! SOOOOO........ you say the standard? Does this mean there is different types of reg plates? Can I have more numbers in it? OR can I take the numbers out of it?!

"Any reg plate that is the same or younger than the original is allowed "

No, same age or OLDER.

You can not have a registration that would make your car appear newer than it actually is.

So, anything from the previous formats

annn aaa or aaa nnna will be fine or alternatively anything between 51 to 64 will also be OK.

The format would have been totally different in 1921...

And its fine as long as you dont make it look newer than it is (I used to have an N reg on a private plate that started with a J)

There's a govern-mental website which you can type in what you want and it will tell you if you can have it or not and for how much.

Doesn't work like that your S21 FAX would have been a 1998. It used to be the 1st letter in this case the s was the year letter but now it's the 2 numbers inbetween the latter's. On a separate not check out your new plate on DVLA own sight I bought both mine from there and both a bargain

Having briefly read through these post I get the impression you believe you can just throw some letters and numbers together and stick them on your car!

This is not the case - a ref needs to already be in circulation through DVLA, there are many sites online that SELL them or DVLA themselves but only if they aren't currently owned, just put into google "private reg" and all your questions will be answered

"Any reg plate that is the same or younger than the original is allowed

Same but older

However it's not it's age you need to disguise you could perhaps get a fiberglass over body shell to hide the Vauxhall badge , and the car

How very dare you. So I can change the 64 to 14?

Yes you can x

SOOOOO how is this reg legal? S21 AGX because surely the cars age there would be classed as 1921?!

Doesn't work like that your S21 FAX would have been a 1998. It used to be the 1st letter in this case the s was the year letter but now it's the 2 numbers inbetween the latter's. On a separate not check out your new plate on DVLA own sight I bought both mine from there and both a bargain

This is frigging rocket science sh*t right here lol! It's a whole new level! I'll have a look on the website AGAIN lol

You could just stick with the number plate on the car....

Sorry got the giggles now....

Na that's boring

So effectively I can get a complete non number plate and this would be classed as old suffix type? But would it be legal without numbers?

Unless your paying 1000s and I mean 1000s you'll not find 1 without numbers. Go on DVLA site type in what you fancy and it will give you your options

So would S14 GGY be deemed acceptable?

Nope. You can't have that one

Why? surely thats acceptable in that format?!"

Go on the DVLA website....

Maybe someone has it already? They don't give a reason why. It's just not for sale.

These are pre the new system. Originally in the sixties registrations ended in A,B,C etc, three letters to start, three numbers then the important year letter. Once they'd gone through the usuable alphabet they just put the year letter at the start so A123ABC for instance, then I believe under pressure by crippled manufacturers they moved to the current biannual system to help sales.

I would just say do what you like with whatever letters and numbers you like. Glue them to your car and then within a reasonable time I'm sure someone in a white car with a blue light will stop you and give you a clear and accurate account of what you can and can't do.

Same age or older. I have my initials as my plate.....depends on how much you want to spend normal start about £200 plus reg fee but don't for forget each time you change your car it £80

You can't just create a plate of your choosing, it has to be dvla issue. And being a 64 plate, your car may be a 2015 model rather than a 14.

The DVLA got wise to naughty plates but AFAIK they cannot retrospectively ban something previously issued, they could however I guess pay market value for it and then withdraw it. A10NOB & A12NOB are still driving around, with a discrete " as one of the fixings.

PEN1S belonged for years to Steve Parish, I thought he still had it.

"SO SO SO HERE ARE MORE QUESTIONS!

64 is currently the year (2014) NOW am I right in saying the numbers my options are 14,214 and 54?

"

You are way overthinking the number thing.

If you are buying a registration that is NOT related to your vehicles actual age, you are NOT restricted to having a 4 in it.

It is only since 2001 that the year has been defined with a number. Prior to that it was defined by a letter. For example, August 1992 to July 1993 was 'K'

There are plenty of websites which have registrations for sale.

You can not simply make up your own - as there is a possibility that it may already exist and be in use.

Every registration has to be unique - that's the whole point.

There is a DVLA website which allows you to configure a registration (or at least there used to be) and will show you if it's available (That's how I did mine waaaaaay back in 1999)

I believe this method is referred to as 'select registration'
