Not a fan of fortnights in the Sun.

I prefer 3/4 night short breaks.

City / Seaside / Countryside all good by me.

Can you make any suggestions of places you like that would be good for getting away too for a few days ?

Mine would be :

UK : Whitby, York, Northern Lake District (Ullswater), Edinburgh

Europe : Berlin, Barcelona, Northern Portugal

World : New York (every time)

Berlin was awesome. I went to see a gig there and was totally unprepared for how much Id love the city.

Prague - go in december to see it lit for christmas or early spring . A beautiful city with lots of history , especially if you love Art Deco / Art Nouveau, but best avoided in the stag/hen party season

Bruges - quaint, quieter but great chocolate and beer!

in the UK - Salisbury, for the cathedral and access to Stonehenge, Woodhenge, Avebury, the New Forest etc

York ...love it there !

Ain't Berlin just the bollox ? !

Like you I was blown away by the place.

Nothing like I had envisaged at all.

The other place that was a surprise was Warsaw. I expected grime & murk and industrial chimneys bellowing out plumes of smoke.

Whilst the drive in from the airport was not exactly picture postcard pretty (are they ever ?), the Old Town was just stunning.

depending on what you want from the lakes i'd choose where you stay.

if you want somewhere with a little nightlife, i'd go for bowness or ambleside but both can be very touristy

(if you want to shop for camping gear or beatrix potter related tatt they are positive hot-beds)

if you want somewhere quiet to chill with the other half then try ullswater. it's northern lakes away from the main resorts but the lake and the views around it are simply breathtaking

if you go again, try the italian restaurants for veggie options

also if you go to some of the more 'bohemian' areas there are quite a few veggie cafes as they cater to the 'hippy' / 'traveller' / 'new earth' sections of the population.

kreuzberg which is a largely turkish populated suburb is also OK for veg based dishes

Menston near Ilkley

Earlier this year I went to Belfast for a meet. I was so impressed with the City and its people, plus the flights from LBA are very reasonable too.

There are a lot of stag parties but don't let it put you off as the city is big enough. Moscow is worth seeing along with Istanbul if you are prepared to go that far.

if you're going baltic, try tallinn as well - only a small city but it is beautiful & u can get a day trip return on the ferry to helsinki if u fancy a change of scenery too.

i went in june and the sun never really set. it was strange coming out of a club at 2/3am and seeing a darkish blue sky

I have not been there yet but will take your advice on that one. I find Europe amazing all round as we don't have any of the buildings and history back in Canada.

I frikin love Barcelona! I know it as well as my own City I've been so many times.

Normally I am there once a year.

Some very good Salsa clubs there, dancers with frightening skillz!

Prague is also good but can be a bit eerie all those cobble stones and no cars, makes you feel somewhat 'Grimms fairytaley'... that was until I went into a club off the main square and there were torture devices on the walls and people dancing naked.

It was just a regular club with normal tourists in it, quite surreal. I reckon they all turned into vampires later on and devoured the tourists.

"First time i went to barcelona was earlier in the year. Didnt get to see everything but i loved the galdi park"

barcelona is a stunning city but so so expensive

it has the most expensive real estate in spain. i think the average house price is like £450,000 or something

when i looked at buying abroad as opposed to in the UK it was on my hit list - soon as i saw the prices, it was soon off it too
