I spent some time last year on Calle Ocho and was honoured to listen to several members of the Little Havana community recalling fleeing from Cuba when Castro overthrew Batista, and the turmoil all through the time leading up to the infamous Bay of Pigs invasion.
Castro's legacy is a mixed one, for the positives he wrought for Cuba, as many negatives could be argued. He was certainly driven by strength and an ideological desire for his country - though he believed that the only way to achieve it was through military dictatorship. |

I dont agree with his politics, but have to admire his stubborness and resolution.
I have always wanted to visit the country. I think it will be wrecked by the Americans very soon though. |

Havana is great, really interesting . Mix of chaos and decaying building with a vibrancy as the locals now have the chance to rebuild their city and environment. Roads dug up all over the place as utilities start to be put right.
When they (Havanans) realise you're not American, they couldn't be nicer & as a comment up there ^^ says, you get to hear both sides of the Castro argument , the love toward Che & Camilo Cienfuegos and their efforts for the people.
I'd go back tomorrow

Yes, agree with many of the comments above. I absolutely love Cuba and have been several times, and whereas I hope it doesn't get spoilt, am all for a better standard of living for the people - some of the most charming, cultured and sexy in the world. |

one of my favourite trips ever- from the beautiful, relaxing beaches to the crazy and fascinating capital but most of all, the awesomely freindly and interesting Cuban people |

Nothing will change, Castro had his good and his bad and the US removing it from Embargo makes the whole situation fluid regardless of who is leader now. |

Another Cuba lover here and hope it's not spoilt much by americanisation. He will be remembered for years to come and kept Cuba unique, amongst the Caribbean islands, in fact globally. I'm sure he had faults but free universal healthcare and education were amongst his gifts to the people, even if they've remained poor and deprived in other areas. Sad to see him go, though Raul - his brother - has been running the country for most of the last decade. |

We went there last year...talking to one of the locals they said they do three things in Cuba....'drink, smoke and wait' perhaps the waiting is now over....it all depends on Trump's take on it....if the clown knows where it is ! |

i think castro's legacy will be an interesting one....
for some he will be seen as a dictator who took over from another dicatator... the human rights and prisoning of his opponents
but the world class healthcare and education they have there can't be something that can be overlooked |

It's interesting, a policy-wonk friend of mine was asked to investigate the Cuban health-care system to see what, if any, lessons could be learned to apply to the NHS.
Cuba has some excellent health outcomes and, indeed, life expectancy in Cuba - a communist dictatorship that lived in a state of perpetual threat for 40-odd years until the USSR's collapse - is higher than the USA, the world's richest country.
Without a pot to piss in, how has Cuba done this?
Turns out it's quite simple; prevention is better than cure.
In Cuba each district, street and family are assigned health workers, who get to know individuals and visit them at home regularly, discussing living and eating habits and recommending things like smoking less, eating sensibly.
Turns out, if you constantly tell people to do the right thing for themselves to their face often enough, people generally live longer, healthier lives.
But we wouldn't want Big Brother telling us it's not our God-given right to eat another KFC Family bucket or open another packet of fags (although fat people and smokers *may* be penalised by the NHS...).

I've not been to Cuba but I would hope for the country that they can stop oppressing dissent whilst retaining the progress made in education and health. It's not good that their doctors have to also work as taxi drivers to make ends meet but I seriously hope the US doesn't get its grubby hands on Cuba. Their record of creating and funding fascism in the region is appalling. |

I've got to laugh at the hypocrisy coming from the left in regards to the healthcare system. You're Corbyns are giving how it's an amazing system which it well may be. However Cuban nationals get treatment free of charge where foreign nationals don't.
Whenever Farage comes out with how this should be how it works here though the loony lefties are quick enough jumped down his throat and want him strung up

The sycophantic, eulogising from Western leaders, Trump aside, is pretty sickening. The guy was a brutal dictator that imprisoned and murdered what he considered to be his opponents or anything 'counter revolutionary' and homosexulaity for a long time was considered counter revolutionary. He himself was a millionaire and led the corresponding lifestyle while his people struggled to make ends meet. Taxi drivers and hotel porters earn more than doctors in Cuba and having seen undercover footage of the Cuban health system I must consider it anything but 'world class'. Easy to be a 'larger than life' character when you don't have elections to concern yourself with and rule by firing squad. Yet another 'communist' regime that has led to mass deaths and oppression of the people.
And similar to other Communist regimes it seems to be a 'family affair' in the same way North Korea is now that his bother was 'given' power.
Only good can come from his death. |
