She backed the original in campaign in the 1975 and was instrumental in pushing through 'The single European act' in 1987. Her position was always quite clear. Britain should be in Europe but sceptical of Europe. That we should be at the heart of Europe (the EU) making sure that Europe works well in Britain's interests.
In my opinion, and I would guess hers also, leaving the EU would not achieve that. She was the Prime Minister of this country for over 10 years and, whilst she had many fights with the EU/EEC she never once put forward a policy of leaving it. I don't think she would be in favour of leaving it now. |

Can I add a bit of perspective here? The body which we the British people voted for in 1973 and re-affirmed in 1975 was a trade body of some 9 countries. Maggie saw the benefits for the UK and rightly supported it. And lets not forget she and my parents were of the generation that saw Europe destroyed by a World War. It made perfect sense. Especially as the French didn't want us to join...
A core element of the Single European Act of 1986 was to create a Single Market within the European Community (which had grown to 11 members) by 1992. It was a TRADE reforming Act.
Regarding free movement of labour:
the Treaty of Rome (1957) provided a right for the free movement of workers within the then European Economic Community. The Directive 2004/38/EC on the right to move and reside freely assembles the different aspects of the right of movement in one document, replacing inter alia the directive 1968/360/EEC.
So again as always with people who don't actually know the facts who seem to surface at the mention of Maggie's name: She didn't sign anything more to do with free movement of labour than we did in 1973. And specifically she kept us out of the Schengen stupidity in 1985.
No the person who cheated this country was Gordon Brown when he and Blair gave away half of Maggie's hard won rebate for nothing and then inked away our Nation's rights with the Lisbon Treaty which changed the European Community in to the European Union promising a Referendum that never happened. And critically timing it so any new incoming Government of 2010 could NOT call a Referendum as THEY promised. And lets all remember that in the coming months when Corbyn & Co lecture us on matters European.
I doubt very much Maggie who was a staunch British Nationalist in many ways would EVER have signed the Lisbon Treaty which handed political and legislative power to a new 'European Union' and she would have seen the clue was in that name. And it would have been killed stone dead right there. So the hypothesis of would she vote to stay in is just that. BUT had she been elected in 2010 like Cameron she would most certainly (IMHO) have taken us out of the EU through a referendum. No negotiation needed. And where again I feel Cameron has played it wrong. He should have gone to the country in June last year with this Referendum and not played this European game of theatrics. Shame on him for not seeing it would damage him. |

I would agree that Cameron's renegotiation makes little difference and he would have been better off just going to the country with the referendum last year. As to MT's position now, we'll never really know and speculation is somewhat pointless. I only say what I think from what I understood her position to be, wanting what was best for Britain and her past record. I totally accept that she may well have come to a different conclusion given the current circumstances we now face, I just personally don't think so. |

Maastricht in 1992... All planned out by Margret Thatcher's government and signed by John major... We were 12 countries then though and most of them were very similar, so not much really happened until we expanded the empire eastwards.

Yes I know and agree with you!
Tories have always loved Europe ted heath, Thatcher, major and now Cameron, even the vast majority of there cabinets were pro Europe, I've got no idea where this idea that the Tories hate Europe comes from!.
It was Maastricht in reality that brought the freedom of movement into law, at least here, I'm not even aware that the UK had signed the treaty of Rome |

The one thing I do give Thatcher credit for?.
She knew that long term , northern Europe joining with southern Europe wouldn't work economically or culturally speaking! Without northern Europe enforcing it's values on them... But that's not multi culturalism so forget that |
