...Up on the Downs

I heard it was something to do with bone density but have no idea if that's so. I googled the question once and could find no answer - maybe it's just cultural, but it is surprising considering athletic prowess generally.

I'm ashamed to say I laughed loud at the big cocks joke..... I'll say three hail Mary's later.

These are racial stereotypes akin to white men not being able to dance and black people having the right muscle fibre to run fast.

heres one theory on it . I knew several people who originated from sub saharan africa , who when pressed admitted they were actually terrified of water to such an extent that they never wanted to even learn to swim !I assume the fact that didnt have a childhood spent on the beaches and learning to swim in the sea was a big factor in this . Think about it , if you were living in a country where water was a precious comoddity and you rarely even saw rain , the notion of swimming for fun or for sport would seem odd to you . I am not suggesting this is the reason for the lack of black skinned participants in the olympics or etc , but it certainly was not something I had ever considered before being told by my friends .

I don't think it's bone density , I think it's to do with the ratio of 'fast' twitch and 'slow 'twitch muscle fiber, but essentially weight to bady mass as it effects moving through water.

also put into perspective how many bodies of water in countries where black people tend to live are not habitats for crocodiles/alligators/hippos etc. it's presumably hardwired into their system to be terrified of water because it probably means death in a lot of instances

It isn't heavy bones.

These are racial stereotypes akin to white men not being able to dance and black people having the right muscle fibre to run fast.

It's simply cultural and ties in with the perpetuated myths above and lack of money for pools in poorer areas.

Eric the Eel....

There have been no white 100m record holders since the 60's

Its down to centre of gravity due to torso shape and denser skeletal structure, plus black atheletes do have lower levels of body fat.

It has nothing to do with culture or wealth.

Do the sprinters warm up faster when it's sunny?

No that's jumpers that warm up quickly

hence Sweaters.

what's that word for the evolving of words?

Without reading all the replies.

I heard that for the most part swimming is not appealing /cool enough to members of the black community.

Sports like basketball, football etc..

Don't shoot the messenger I can't remember where I heard it.

It's also nothing to do with bone density.

Also people in Africa tend to have very limited access to swimming pools, where as football, running, etc.. Are far more accessible for poorer countries.

How it explains lack of black British, American, European... Swimmers tho??

Probably refer back to the first point I made.

Also black guy's and women tend to be naturally more muscular and as muscle is heavy can be a distinct disadvantage in the water.

Remember the basketball movie "White men can't jump?"

A variation on a theme, but "Black men can't swim".

I will start writing the script now!

Would it be remiss of me to say there's a business opportunity in N Africa for a crash course in swimming lessons?
