It's born out of necessity though, in conversation you have tone of voice, expression etc to enhance what you say in typed or written word you have to trust the reader to get what you mean, I guess lol is just away to help get the intent across. It does become a habit and get over used tho, I will try harder!

I've never watched the Simpsons so I have no idea of the context but I'm guessing sarcasm?

I use 'haha' if I actually laugh or *giggles* rather than explain that I 'lol'd

Personally, I don't think that there's any need for any sort of text abbreviation bollox these days. It was different when you only had about six characters to get your message across but now you can type as much as you want in a message. The worst part about it though, is that children now speak like they text and write how the talk. You should se some of the things that get handed in on assignments and exams at school.

It's one of my pet hates - I never put lol on the end of a sentence. I don't logically know why I dislike it, I just think I know if it is funny or not without those 3 letters added to emphasise it.

You never know. Ninjas can be deceptive. Is he called Mark, still lives at home with his Mum and is 45? If so it's him!

I've heard my kids say it instead of actually laughing. But laughing is an involuntary reaction, and is witnessed in all cultures. To actually say LOL just means you haven't found something funny. They've stopped saying it now.

I don't mind it being used in a text as a reaction to something truly funny. But how often is it used, in answer to something that would at best raise a wry smile or an eyebrow. The tinterweb powers that be have to come up with something more suitable. Fast.
