I can't watch these types of programmes. It's seeing the desperation in people's eyes, the belief they'll be the next best thing even though they lack talent or personality. Then hearing the cruel, cutting remarks.

Everyone should be given an opportunity to to get on in life  whether that opportunity is given on TV is debatable |

Now that is weird, I'm watching about 15 mins behind real time, so you're telling me about acts I haven't seen yet. I thought the 22 year old Simon was pretty good, freaked me out a bit, but in a good way. Mmmmm Pizza!!!! |

My daughter wanted to go on BGT with her clarinet and the hardest thing for me to do as her father was to tell her she wasn't good enough and that she'd be letting herself in for a lot of heartache. It took a bit of time to convince her that to be THAT good she'd need to eat, breathe and sleep music, that it needs to be the most natural thing in the world for her to do, that she'd practise because she loved doing it - not because her music teacher says she must.
She took it hard at first but realised I was right, but not before telling her friends she was going to appear on the show.
I watch some of these acts on there and I think to myself, "Why didn't their families tell them how awful they are? Why weren't they honest with them?" |

I really don't believe people watch this shit. All it does at the end of is line Simon Cowell's pockets. I will always vote for the alternative track that gets the Xmas No1. it is cheap TV like any other reality show  |

There are probably a great many reasons why contestants are not told by their families 'that they are just not good enough.' The number of reasons could be as varied as the number of contestants.
I could never tell my child or any other member of my family that they are not good enough. I cannot think of anything more destructive. They should have the full support of adults around them at all times. The best lesson in life would have been the hardest when they don't get through the auditions, when they don't even get to see the judges or get booed off by the audience. Yes it would be hard, but life is, it's character forming. What kind of character is formed by familial put downs ?
My job would then be to support and encourage further. The benefits from going to auditions , the extra practice, the experience , the confidence building in meeting a huge variety of people, in sharing in others lack of success and seeing how they handle it , these are good enough reasons for helping my child go through this - FABULOUS for everyone involved.
To be the self appointed God of my child's ambitions and to crush them is not my role. Life will do that for me. |

I have to disagree there. Self-appointed God? What's that nonsense all about? I know my child, and she's an ok clarinet player, her music teacher thinks that with practice, she could become a very good clarinet player, but the problem, you see, is that her heart simply isn't in it. She enjoys it sure but it doesn't set her world alight. She used to love playing it but that changed when she started playing hockey, which, incidentally, she has a natural talent for, and I take her to whatever match she's playing in come rain or shine and feel immensely proud of her when I watch her play.
My job as her father is not to nurse her cuts and bruises as she gets them but to try and prevent her getting them in the first place.
I could have let her go on that stage and parp a few notes out and let Simon Cowell roll his eyes because he sees no pounds signs above her head or hear any ching-ching sounds winging their way to his pockets, I could have done that, and watched her hopes crushed by the ordeal, but I chose to be realistic with her and explain that if she really wanted it she wouldn't have started practicing in earnest only AFTER applying to go on the programme.
The lesson she learned from all this is to be realistic and to understand that sometimes simply wanting something isn't going to make it happen. She still watches BGT and often says, "Thanks Dad, you saved me from so much embarrassment", when she sees the abysmal acts on there who's families weren't as realistic with them. |

Why do people resent Simon Cowell making money ?
The same can be said about anything - including football or Coronation Street. Stop watching them because the business people making them are gaining financially ? weird idea. |

You've misunderstood me: I agree. There have been some real stars discovered on programmes like this who would have remained unknown.
No, I'm talking about people with no talent but want to be famous and the delusional.
When I'm taking a witness statement that seems to have no end I would love to swap places with Beyonce, as I think I can sing better!
However my delusions lasts for nano seconds, I would never act on it, then again my life isn't that bad! |

Posted before reading this: exactly my point why I no longer watch these programmes. Some of the contestants are not good enough but the families fuel the delusion and it's painful to watch.  |
