In my experience, people who live in Chelsea are as miserable as sin (and the women think their s**t don't stink!), so, no I have not heard of the 'Chelsea Smilers'.

Do enlighten us.....

The Smilers, so the story goes, were a gang of football hooligans. Depending which version of the story you hear, they would either roam the streets of South London, travel around in a blue Transit Van or – if you looked particularly easy to scare – would go door-to-door.

Details varied, but the basic essence of the story was this. The Smilers would confront you and ask you if you supported Chelsea Football Club. Possibly they would ask you a series of trivia questions to prove it.

In the version I was told, they would then slice the corners of your mouth – upwards if you said yes, downwards if you said no. Then they would punch you hard, so you’d scream, thus ripping your mouth into a permanent smile.

Also known as a Cheshire grin. It is used as a form of cutting , marking your enemies but as far as I'm aware the football hooligan link is a myth. Not to say hooligans didn't cut you in such a manner but I doubt they went door to door and they wouldn't have cut their own supporters.

The Chelsea smile or Cheshire grim or whatever you want to call it is not a myth that went on all over the country.

The Chelsea smilers are a myth though unless they are still trying to find my school now

I grew up with one of the notorious Chelsea headhunters. You'd be surprised what they'd stoop to.

Glasgow

In parts of Glasgow, it's done with a Stanley knife with two blades, held apart by a matchstick making the cut almost impossible to suture well.

I remember going to a league cup game in the 80's at the bridge against Millwall. 4 or 5 of the Millwall hooligans I saw running up Fulham Road hitting anything that moved were the same people I used to see at Chelsea most weeks. Less about affiliation to a club and more about having a ruck for the sake of it.

not necessarily true. I know a guy who was a Chelsea Headhunter and he is very intelligent. There was a documentary years ago about the West Ham ICF and there were some highly educated professional men in that. Common denominator was they liked a punch up

Pmsl bit jaded there kid!! It's not "for no reason" it's for their club lol. Think you need to sit down and have a wee cuppa tea. What they do is up to them. And I'm pretty sure modern football violence is premeditated and social media plays a huge part in it all... So as for seeking violence for no reason? It's up to two groups of people as to what they do to get their kicks... Is frank Bruno a gobshite? Is vitali klitchko a gobshite ( I'm sure he holds a doctorate) would that make Muhammad Ali a gobshite thick twat? That's all needless violence surely? Who are you to call names? I'm sure Stanley park is full of gobshites of a Saturday afternoon... I'd dare you to call them gobshites to their faces. Your opinion holds about as much water as a sieve.

And for complete transparency , I'm a season ticket holder

I hate violence

It has no place on the terraces.

But I'm not as small minded as to generalise a whole group of people. Some are thick as two short planks....

Some are intelligent.

You can't compare heavyweight professional boxers to football hooligans. Come on. I'm a Goodson park season ticket holder and have seen more than my fair share of violence home and away.

And as for I dare to call them gobshites, I can and have when splitting up fights. It's not up to people what they do to get there kicks when people can and have been caught up and received a good kicking. Like when "fans" storm police escorts to attack anyone in an opposing shirt.

The facts remain. Most football hooligans pre meditate fights. They generally take place miles from the ground to avert the law.

The people you see fighting outside the taxi drivers club or across the park on priory road, they are common thugs that pretend to be hoolies, that in stark reality have little or nothing in common with modern "firms"

I totally agree with 90% of your view. Just not the bit about them all being thick

Most footy hooligans are not as thick as you think. Most have very well paid jobs and high standards of living. The thuggish behaviour was always well organised well in advanced with all most military precision.

Chelsea headhunters, combat 88, intercity firm or who ever their club loyalty lay were far from being a bunch of beer'd up thick heads.

The same effect can be achieved by putting a credit/bank card between the corners of the mouth and then punching the person in the guts.
