It all started in India & Egypt around 3000BC
The modern trend however can really be attributed to the easy access to porn that the internet has brought. Obviously the porn industry likes to remove all of the hair to improve visibility, and the youth of the internet generation assumed that this is what they're "supposed to do"
Personally, I couldn't care either way what anyone else does with their pubes, but I've never had an issue with an impenetrable jungle or loose pubes that didn't just wipe off my tongue... in fact, I quite like the variety of different ladies doing different things.
