New papers released today showing she told Argentina to get their arses off the island. She threatened France for supplying missiles to Peru that then went to Argentina. She also told Reagan. that his pleas for more talks were falling on deaf ears, and we were going to reclaim our sovereign lands.

Can you imagine the current crop of politicians having the balls to do that?

Simon Weston was on the news as well. He said although the troops did not necessarily like her or her politics, they did admire her decisiveness

The old bitch introduced privatisation, which then meant that people had to pay market prices and inflated prices for basic needs such as Telephone, electricity Gas, Water etc under the guise that competition provided choice, what it did in fact provide was a method of allowing more directors to obtain greater bonus and incentives. She then sold off council house stock which now means that people with poor incomes cannot no longer afford houses.. yes I am so pleased she has gone and wish she went into cleaning instead of politics..BITCH....rant over u can see im not a fan

I was in the Forces at the time and well remember our CO giving us a briefing about what was happening, and he made, in all seriousness, the comment "That woman's got big balls to play us against the Argies."

Never was a truer comment made at the time.

have to remember she gave the order to send in the SAS at the iranian embassy.

no one had seen the SAS in public or in action on time and it sent shockwaves around the world.

it showed britain had the very best when it came to dealing with terrorist on home soil and because of that no one has dared to do such an act again.

i didnt like her. but when it came it decision that had to be made she didnt fuck about.

Sorry you are misguidedI work for BT, the funding for the expanding network was already in place, the new electronic exchanges which allowed greater capacity and more connections was already being installed, she just popped up at an opportune moment and announced it was on the back of privateisation,

I would challenge anyone who talks about what Maggie did to the unions and the miners to watch Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain about the 70's. The miners greed under corrupt unions meant they held this country to ransom... I well remember the power cuts and sitting in candle light because of them.

To think Scargill was getting £34k per year for his rent up till recently.... how many union dues did that equate to? What an icon of the working man he is!

I read somewhere years ago that she ignored several warnings over the Argentinian invasion of the Falklands. The gist of the article was that she used the conflict as a tool for re election, when previously she'd been very low on the opinion polls. True or not i can't say but i wouldn't put it past her to send men to their deaths to save her own hide.

As to the comments about best politician ever, most decisive perhaps, but her decisions all made the rich richer and the poor poorer. Would we have such a north/south divide without her influence?

I come from what must be the apitomy of a mining village , Maltby Rotherham. Sadly like some other union members the minors were used by the likes of Scargill as pawns for their own means. Good old Scargill still has a house in London paid for by the NUM, not very socialist really. NUM taking him to court to end this unwritten agreement.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, an extra few hundred paras or marines and the Falklands war wouldn't have happened , they new the argies were gearing up to invade and they did nothing till it was too late , end result more graves filled with our brave service men and a bill to the tax man for billions for lost equipment and a permanent base at the islands.

She will be remembered more in my book for destroying the miners and selling off the silver!

I've been there most islanders want us to leave and let's face it how would we feel if the argies took over Anglesey !

So was my dad. I remember him filling out the time sheets for what he had done. He always said it was ridiculous that you could claim an hour for a ten minute job. I also remember him shitting himself that he would lose his house because of the unions calling for strikes.

There is no doubt that the unions of the time did need to be sorted, the likes of red Robbo at Leyland, and Scargill for the miners was everything that was bad about the unions of the time.

But you now have to remember how bad it can be if we adopt true tory methods of employment such as the things they want to introduce if they get in again.

They want to allow companies to hire and fire at will, they want to reduce the powers of Employment tribunals, if we do not have safegaurds you could be sacked without any redress, how will people pay their mortgages once this happens, is this really what people want?

Could not have written this better myself!! But you forgot to mention...the BITCH chose to ignore intelligence reports regarding the Argentine intent!

And then pretended to be surprised! Oh and withdrew our long standing Nuclear Sub from the area prior to the invasion...In my opinion she engineered the whole sorry story. Relying on our Armed forces to save her political ass!

She destroyed and divided our country like no other. BITCH BITCH BITCH

Dealing with the Falklands specifically, rather than turning this into a general Thatcher debate.

While I agree that once the invasion had taken place, Thatcher did handle the situation very well, but there are things that should be remembered:

1) Her policy of defence cuts at the time helped cause The war, specifically Lord Carrington, John Nott and Thatcher had agreed to withdraw The Endeavor which was a token Navy ship, but gave UK an active presence around The Falklands. This gave the Argentine Junta all the ammunition they needed to believe that they could invade and take over the Falklands, live with what little fuss that caused and they would regain The Malvinas.

2) All the available intelligence of the the time was ignored until it was too late, leading directly to Carrington's immediate resignation

3) Thatcher was now a rat trapped in a corner, unpopular at home for policies that many in her own party deemed to be failing, the first PM in God knows how long to have actually lost a piece of sovereign real estate without agreement. She had 2 choices resign and the Tories would have almost certainly have lost the Election which would have followed because of the circumstances, or stand and fight and put British lives at risk to win back The Falklands to get her out of the self created mess. She decided to fight for her own career which was totally linked to winning back The Falklands and at that time The Thatcher Determination and refusal to listen to others helped us win back The Falklands.

4) She got very lucky, she may well have threatened Reagan and France and whoever else, but her luck held in that the numerous Navy ships that were successfully bombed by the Argies, but not blown up because the bombs were either dropped from the wrong height or fused incorrectly, meant that she could continue to press forward with the War effort. I well remember the night it was announced on TV that HMS Sheffield had been hit, later sunk, just how shocking that was, and in the days that folloed Coventry and Antelope both being hit and sunk. What we didn't know is that I think all but 3 navy ships were successfully bombed but fortuntely most didn't go off. If they had, we'd have lost the war and Thatcher would be known as the lady whom took us to war and lost. Instead her luck held out at the cost of more than 300 British lives, the victory had a side benefit of enhancing Britains reputation at the time, and strengthened Thatcher against a weak Labour opposition to have an easy Election victory a year later, after which she was able to have free reign and cause the damage to Britain that she did, the legacy of which were things like the Banking crisis, mass unemploment and devastation of many communities and cities especially in Northern England and Scotland, some of whom still suffer today.

Mrs Thatcher will be recorded in the history books as a Prime Minister that truly changed a country. Many Prime Ministers before and since, simply held office, but she forcefully removed complacency, ineffeciency and waste and drove UK PLC into the modern world.

Did she do everything right? Of course not - no-one can always do everything right but in footballing terminology she was a real game changer the like of which have not been seen since.

Anyone who can actually remember the shambles of nationalised industries corrupted by Union power, has to accept that what she did was in the best interests of UK PLC. Most anti Thatcher sentiment eminates from people too young to actually know how Britain was pre Thatcher and/or who simply have an extreme socialist agenda and can't accept that competition is impoprtant for any society to thrive.

In my personal opinion her biggest failure was not selling the Community Charge (Poll Tax) to the population at large and allowing rioting activists to steal the show.

I agree with some things you say but there has to be a happy medium. I work for a company with 800 employees spread over 12 sites. We have cases at 10 out of the 12 where we cannot remove people from the business who are playing the system, we cannot even recruit to replace them and as a result they are keeping people who want to work out of work. These people have been given every chance to sucseed but have chosen this path.

I also see the need to protect the vulnerable which is something we are proactive at too.

And if you follow corrct performance management you can dismiss people as long as you have evidence to support this, prob is its time consuming but a safegaurd from ruthless employers

"Mrs Thatcher will be recorded in the history books as a Prime Minister that truly changed a country.

1) Her policy of defence cuts at the time helped cause The war, specifically Lord Carrington, John Nott and Thatcher had agreed to withdraw The Endeavor which was a token Navy ship, but gave UK an active presence around The Falklands. This gave the Argentine Junta all the ammunition they needed to believe that they could invade and take over the Falklands, live with what little fuss that caused and they would regain The Malvinas.

up untill 1978 Endeavor was used as a supply ship to the Royal Enginers detachment that had been theres since 1940

only in 1978 the then labour goverment decided to cut cost and remove this detachment as it was decided by the then labour goverment that no one in the right minds would invade the falklands as its just a worthless peatbog

thats what started it and thatcher ended it

i was there in 1982 and was there again in 1983 helping to clear up the mess the argies left by placing landmines all over the islands and not leaving any form of maps so they could be found and destroyed

"Yes she did introduce privatisation one example bt there was a waiting list to get a phone back then now with 100,000 less workers for the tax payer to fund its a lot better service.

And yes she had some bollocks to kick the argies out

good old maggie Sorry you are misguidedI work for BT, the funding for the expanding network was already in place, the new electronic exchanges which allowed greater capacity and more connections was already being installed, she just popped up at an opportune moment and announced it was on the back of privateisation, "

BT as a nationalised company was a god awful bottomless pit of cash where nobody knew who was in charge or what their job was supposed to be. I've been in telecoms all my working life (up until recently) and I can tell you now that the biggest 'industry' within BT was whose turn it was to make the tea whilst the poker school was being set up in a little used office somewhere deep in the heart of each exchange. People turned up for 'work' but little 'work' was actually done until knocking off time at 3-4-5-whatever-pm the 'workers' decided was knocking off time. Where a clocking in/out system was still in use it wasn't unknown for one man of an 8 man team to punch out all the other 7 men's cards one week, then another man would do it the following week etc etc. This practice allowed each man to go home early and still get a full day's pay for it.

I came into telecoms not long after BT was privatised in 1984 but the men who had been there for many years found it difficult to adapt the this new fangled system of actually working 8 hours a day for the 8 hours pay they were getting. Several needed counselling I think.

Thatcher though was in power from May 1979. she made many decisions that changed events and changed Labours policies. The decision to withdraw that ship was most definately Thatcher's government, even if it was simply to ratify the previous administrations decision.

It would only hold credence as being a Labour decsion if the invasion had occurred within lets say 12 months of Thatcher coming to power, but 3 years later, and combined with the defence cuts she was planning including massive cutbacks in the Navy, nope the responsibility lies at her door as does the decisions she took to save her own skin.

For the record, I don't have any issue with Thatcher sending our armed services to War to regain Islands that belonged to UK and had been taken by force, but that doesn't change my opinion as to whom was in part responsible for the war, and the political decisions she took to save herself and her party after the Argies invaded.

"have to remember she gave the order to send in the SAS at the iranian embassy.

no one had seen the SAS in public or in action on time and it sent shockwaves around the world.

it showed britain had the very best when it came to dealing with terrorist on home soil and because of that no one has dared to do such an act again.

i didnt like her. but when it came it decision that had to be made she didnt fuck about.

She only ordered them to go in, The SAS have been around since WW2 undertaking many a fine role, what she did and for her own kudos because her popularity was waining. The SAS didnt ask or want the recognition, it was better for them to remain unknown, once their activities became high lighted it placed lives at risk in places like Northern Ireland as the press then wanted to report every placethey were operating, so no she was a selfish bitch only interested in her aims of becoming the first female Primeminister.

Ok then, name ONE active SAS member currently out there operating? Just one please. You're talking complete tosh to justify your views on Mrs Thatcher."

Did I say she named them individually, lol, If you read properly I said by bringing their presence to the attention of the world she put lives at risk just because of the work they undertake, It appears from your views that you want to get into bed with her, as she is so unfeeling perhaps the 2 of you will be an ideal match lol

Labour spend spend spend. The Tories then come in and tax tax tax to repair the damage caused by labour.... I love it when labour and their supporters say 13 years later "It's the tories fault." But then spend all the money the tories left, sell gold at it's lowest price, etc etc.... If Maggie had resigned a labour gov would have given the Falklands away and given the Argies a shit load of money and given them all benifits aswell... Maggie was far from perfect but the best sinse Churchill!

I did come in afterwards but strangely when BT was privatised the govt didn't push all the workers out on their arses and start up a brand new spickety span company with a completely new workforce on the Monday morning after privatisation. The newly private company still had hundreds of thousands of workers who were used to the old way - I heard it all the time from old hands who grumbled about being asked to work all day by a relatively young NEW manager who would not allow them to sit on their arses doing nothing. Doing nothing suddenly became unemployable.

Whether the guys took the piss by design or by very bad management can only be guessed at (but you have to remember that that was the legacy of a system where promotion was always from within and a manager one week was a worker with many friends and a social life the previous week and didn't want to lose them)

That's how it was, and not just in BT either. Thatcher knew that the role of the government as the nation's main employer was inherently wrong and she also knew that by privatising the utilities that they would fall into the hands of private ownership and - ultimately - accountability.

She also condemned the children of this country to a life of warmed up turkey twizzlers by closing school kitchens.

She will always be remembered as Thatcher the Milk Snatcher but it was Harold Wilson's Labour government that stopped free milk for secondary school pupils in 1968.

Maggie contiuned what Labour had started as Tory Education Secretary, she stopped free milk for over 7's several years later.

At the time free milk for primary school children was costing £14m a year, twice as much as what was being spent on school books.

I think we all care about the health of our children, I sooner all parents looked after their kids health rather than burden a gouverment (any gouverment) with it.

What I find quizzical about the files that have been released is the clamour from some quarters yelping "Ah! At last, the Truth!"

This is assuming that Mrs T told the truth 30 years ago knowing full well that in 30 years time the files would be released.

Why should it be a general taxpayer requirement to give free milk to schoolchildren? Which other country would absolve parents of such a fundamentally basic responsibility?

So where is the catastrophic failure of this policy in the current population who are under 40 and who would therefore have been deprived free milk?

Following your logic and observing current levels of obesity we ought to be absolving parents of the obligation to provide any food for their own children and make it a State sponsored obligation to feed all children......

"Miners and steel workers will never forgive here"

Coming from a mining and steelworks background I have nothing to forgive. It's people like Maggie Thatcher who encouraged my parents to start their own business, who in turn encouraged my wife to start her own too. Thankfully the conservatives are keeping labour at bay long enough for her to build a strong business before labour try to piss her hard work away.

What a load of hogwash. You are using that as a blatant justification for your ongoing and eternal hatred for Tories in general and Mrs Thatcher in particular.

A half pint of milk per day is going to add nothing at all to the daily requirements of a child's nutritional needs. They should be getting that at home anyway, or do you advocate an Orwellian society where babies are forcibly removed from their parents to be raised by the state and indoctrinated with state ideals so as to retain power in perpetuity.

It must have been a really difficult decision to drum up badly needed dumb-ass patriotic fever, in order to shore-up the last vestiges of a defunkt Empire and draw a murky cloud over the real war - the purposeful and brutal dismantling of working class power in this country.

The current corruption and scandals of the establishment are but a minor side-issue to the death-like grip the priveledged few now have over the majority - a hammer blow to progressive politics dealt under the shadow of a, on the face it, ridiculous conflict barely worth one life - never mind the hundreds it caused.

Yes, taking the decision to send a hugely expensive task-force against a virtually bankrupt state with a third-rate military to save a few hardy colonials and a bunch of penguins was a real notch on our bedpost of prestige

Personally, this thread has gone totally off track!

I wont say was I truely want to, but just a few highlights as this thread has angered me quite a bit, some of the horrendous comments being made about someone who is old and sick and did the job to the best of their ability!

My dad served in the Falkland War, did he ever gripe about it? No he didn't, Did he have the upmost respect for her? Damn right he did, did he lose friends during the conflict? Hell yes, so to my knowledge, the majority of the people serving at the time agreed with what they were sent to do!.

As with all the crap about privatisation, the minors, selling off council homes, there are two side to every story and yes I am too young to voice a proper informed opinion, however, the selling off of council houses, was to give 'normal' people the chance to 'own' their own homes at affordable prices, yes it is a shame that they haven't rebuilt stocks to help other families, but then other governments have since allowed other nationalities to enter the country and obtain said housing when I was told to get myself pregnant if I wanted a home when I was facing homelessness when I was 16 under a labour government...go figure!

And speaking about the withdrawal etc of free milk and the amount of people on benefits, and having any amount of kids they want, did you know that contraceptives are actually free in this country 'shock horror' and have been for at least the last 20 odd years I have been on them so there is no bloody excuse!

But yet, people as in the 'common' people still know their way around the system whilst people with genuine need of help seem to struggle in the battle of the barriers, being put up against them, because the whole lot has been screwed with in the first place!

"she stopped my milk when i was at school

You my friend are wrong. Thatcher stopped universal free milk for school children 9 years before she entered number 10. When she was Secretary of State

She also condemned the children of this country to a life of warmed up turkey twizzlers by closing school kitchens.

Unlike you, it seems, I care about the health of my children so as far as I'm concerned the old bag didn't do a good job. That's without mentioning 20% + interest rates etc etc.

Have a read of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations to see where her policies come from."

Ah, so you went to my school? No? Well what do you know then?

I left primary school in 1979, and had free milk right up until i left. We even had free orange juice for those who did not drink milk.

I did wonder if this was just my local council, which was Wandsworth. But my OH comes from Yorkshire, and she had it until 1981.

So my friend, it would appear you are wrong.

Oh, and we both had fresh food cooked on site at both our primary schools and secondary schools.

I can only guess you lived in a deprived area where your council did not give a rats arse!?

With regards interest rates, that is not solely a Tory problem. In the 70's inflation was an average of 13% and peaked under a Labour goverment at 25%.

As I have said in a previous post, get Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain about the 70s and educate yourself on the disgraceful mess that Maggie had to clean up.

An interesting point on the show is that the first 'right to buy' was under a labour government. It was their idea and Maggie run with it. Personally, I am thankful. My Nan bought her place for £12k and its now worth close to £1million, which has benefited her, my dad, me and my siblings and also the next generation.

"The old bitch introduced privatisation, which then meant that people had to pay market prices and inflated prices for basic needs such as Telephone, electricity Gas, Water etc under the guise that competition provided choice, what it did in fact provide was a method of allowing more directors to obtain greater bonus and incentives. She then sold off council house stock which now means that people with poor incomes cannot no longer afford houses.. yes I am so pleased she has gone and wish she went into cleaning instead of politics..BITCH....rant over u can see im not a fan

If Thatcher's policies were so bad, so wrong for the country, Labour had 13 years to renationalise those industries and build new housing stock. Why didn't they?"

They were not industries they were utilities industry was already dead destroyed by Thatcher and the cost of renationalising the utilities would have been horrendous.

"Mrs Thatcher will be recorded in the history books as a Prime Minister that truly changed a country.

In my personal opinion her biggest failure was not selling the Community Charge (Poll Tax) to the population at large and allowing rioting activists to steal the show."

Let's look at the facts; without North sea oil revenue(which was found under a Labour governement, but werent around to fully benefit from it), Thatcher wouldnt have been able to do half of what she wanted to do(tax cuts, pay down the national debt).

My gran was old enough to remember her; she hated her with a passion. This was a woman who was widowed when my dad was 4, had 3 jobs to make ends meet, worked her whole life and when she retired, she had thatcher cut the earnings link to her state pension.

"The old girl got us talking

No she did not the OP got us talking

ok start a thread on that well known leader john smith see how long that lasts if anyone remembers him

John Smith was never PM and if he had been I am almost certain he would have been one of the best he certainly had a heart which is something Thatcher lacks.

This thread has only gone on so long because just as many ppl posting here have a great dislike of Thatcher as admire her it is not because we all love her.

"

never said he was pm i said leader

Thatcher was praised for going to the rescue of 1800 Islanders but now oil has been found in the waters off the Falklands it make you wonder if the old girl had a crystal ball?

It was known at the time there was oil.

True - but the commercial viability was not known until fairly recently

but as reserves run out then oil no matter where it is will become commercially viable and this was known too."

Also very true - I have a friend down there involved at a high level. Wish he had tipped me off a couple of years ago before the shares went up 2000%

I know you said leader but he never had the chance to prove himself so I don't think you can make a comparison between a prime minister and a leader of the opposition.

What is less well known is that Harold Wilson also went up against Argentina over the Falklands. However he did not need to win an election so simply called the ambassador in and told him there were nuke subs in the vicinity carrying out manoeuvres. Argies backed down and nobody died. Sometimes being a good politiciAn does not need to hurt the population!

He also liked a good drink.

As far as I know John had no prior information about a heart condition. A lot of folk are in a similar situation.

The Faulklands was a war just waiting to happen, if you watch the documentary shock directive it will give you back ground on the chicargo project which was an economic experiment by the right wing of the US on how to control populations using natural and man made desasters. The CIA experimented with the right wing in Latin American countries this caused a domino effect of instability. The experiment was also used by the right wing in the UK too lesser extent. If you want to know why we are in such a mess economically watch the documentary

"Come on _unchbox the money had to come from somewhere to pay the riches tax cuts and the good old Tory way of robbing the poor and weak to pay the rich really had its best days in Thatchers era.

If we had no rich entrepreneurs and businessmen in this country driving the economy, then the poor would have even less.

Communisn does not work, so there will always be rich and poor

So I am a communist just because I dont agree with greed?.

I am saying why take from the needy to give to the greedy and no one can deny that has always been Tory policy how much money does a person need?"

I never said you was a communist, I said that the only political platform for everyone having the same is communism... aint that dont work.

I get sick of hearing that the rich and successful should be penalised and their wealth should be shared out to the needy. We live in a capitialistic world, not Robin of Sherwood fantasy world. If people dont have much, work harder and smarter and get more.

The idea that you cant tax those rich and successful to the bone is madness. The French Socialist government have raised their top rate tax rate to 75%, and guess what. The masters of industry are emigrating.

We had the brain drain from this country for much the same reasons, and we frequently see top businessman, sportsman and musicians disappearing off to a nice tax haven.

If we keep hitting the successful with a stick and robbing them to feed the poor, the only people left in this country will be the poor... and where would you be then? A socialist utopia of everyone being on the same level.

No envy here I have worked all my life and live reasonably well and I am more than happy to pay my fair share as I have a fair sense of play (funny that's supposed to be a British trait but don't see a lot wanting it on this post) if you look you will see that I have said why policies that give millionaires more and take from the less well off to pay for it don't give me all this they deserve it as they work hard so do most folk in this country but they don't have a government that looks after them.

Tories are only fucking things up more in the short time they have been in the borrowing has risen by some and nothing whatsoever to do with Labour now (for blame see Osborne etc) those in charge who must take the blame they can only blame the last lot for so long but I have a feeling you will choose to ignore the facts.

What would be good is to have someone back in power with some clear visions, concrete policies and to go with them. Someone with balls who will stand up for what they believe and drive the changes through. Someone with the interest of the UK and its residents at heart.

I dont think that someone is Cameron and definately not Miliband.

Please say exactly which policy or policies give millionaires more and take from the less well off? I think that you will find that the wealthier an individual is, the more that individual pays as a percentage of what they own. I would say just from that starting point you will have a hard job to back up your claim.

Hang on a minute. Income tax is loaded heavily in favour of the less well off and graded income tax is an inherently unfair punishment on high income earners. Why should a Medical Consultant earning 100,000 a year give up 50,000 to the State (50%) after personally investing time, effort and patience to achieve a professional qualification when a shop assistant only has to give up 15% of their salary? That is an unfair starting point to begin with. By definition, the Consultant is of a higher value to the State than a shop assistant but the State punishes them and takes 50% of their earnings in tax and NI.

Logically, how can that be fair?

Your example refers to the 40% rate that went up briefly to 50% and has been returned to where it was before.
