Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

The Birmingham council workers have finally got a ruling that shows they were paid less than men.

Birmingham face a £2m claim just on this case.

The consequences of this case for all public sector agencies and councils will be interesting to watch.

I guess our Council Tax will have to go up next year.

They have been fighting this case for so long. It won't just be Birmingham though. When the case was first brought lots of local authorities took legal advice on their exposure. They have all been burying their heads in the sand waiting for this decision.

I know a few of our local council have already settled before legal costs started mounting

I'm not sure if you are just exclaiming or whether you support/condemn the decision.

Neither as equality is when both sides are balanced equally. They are not now and they won't be if the ruling is upheld.

So there is nothing we can do to try and balance things? I'd better stay in bed and give up.

I battled for equal pay and conditions many years ago - and won my case. Since then I never stopped advocating equality and fairness in the workplace.

Good for you.

I had always thought I was being treated fairly until one very senior job I left. During my resignation period they appointed the man I recommended to them, allowed him to work part time when I had been turned down for this and paid him a net salary greater than I was getting full time. I have become much harder in my negotiations since that experience.
