No more free range eggs

There will be no more free range eggs on the shop shelvesfrom Monday. All flocks are being kept inside due to Aviation flu. Well they certainly kept that quiet.

All farming is industrial. This flu has particularly affected free range - which is the "best" for bird welfare. As for flu - the bird population is the repository that kills thousands annually - so there is a bit of balance. |

Chickens can fly but owners often clip their wings to prevent it. They cannot fly far which is why fox's in particular prey on them. A fox in a henhouse will kill every hen regardless of the fact that they only need to eat one. That's why many farmers shoot the buggers |

Mine do not have their wings clipped and I can guarantee you they can flap and potentially roost in a tree. But they aren't flying off anywhere far even though their wings are not clipped. Plus they like their coup they huddle up in there on their own accord when it starts to get dark, thereby stopping Mr Fox getting to them. |

No. Free range requires free access to outdoor space of a certain size per number of hens. They will be relabelled barn eggs whilst the restrictions remain in place. |

I mean we could let it rip.
Who knows what might happen? It might infect pheasants, pigeons and bats, create a new super plague that they'd have to develop vaccines for, and shut all the pubs again. I suspect there might be sharks with lasers involved.
Free range eggs are nice, but be careful what you wish for. |

We have 20 chooks mostly heavy French breeds but we also have a group of 6 legbars and marans who actually sleep in a tree they kinda scramble up buy in the morning they do fly down. We'll more they use their wings at warp speed to avoid crashing into the ground but they are really high up at night. |

There were two cases of avian flu in the area I work but apparently they weren't a strain that was transmissible to humans. I imagine farmers still want to protect their flocks of chickens from being wiped out by it from a financial point of view though. |

There are very little free range eggs about these days anyway, the ones marked free range only have to comply with this
"legal requirements for free-range eggs ensure a minimum amount of space and litter for the hens: no more than nine hens a square metre, 10cm of feeder a bird and one drinker for 10 birds."
It does not mean they are free to range where they want as they did when I was a child |
