Does anyone have one of these? Looking to get one after using my brothers but not looking to spend the sort of money he did (100s). Any recommendations (or avoid like the plagues)?

I used one for spinal stenosis and Mr N used one for his back pain. They work enough to be worth buying but you won't be pain free in our experience. We paid around £30

I’ve only ever used one in early labour. It was rubbish.

Gps can do very little for severe pain

Bridlington.

I use a cheap one that I bought on a well known on-line site, though I use it as a masturbation aid.

It works perfectly well.

For chronic back pain, having it low intensity and constant it effectively distracts from the normal pain.

Sadly I know this myself. I've just not taken the TENS option

Both of us took that route in desperation.

Oddly enough, that's true. Being in pain...the promise of more pain through exercise, perversely helps alleviate the original pain

Or it did in my case, with back and wrist pain.

Have one that gets used very rarely. Sometimes it seems to work like magic. Sometimes it's just temporary. Sometimes not at all.

Also have an ultrasound thingy that has a similarly erratic success rate but they're always worth trying.

A lot seems to be pot luck as to whether you get the thing in the right place or depth.

If it doesn't work you can always buy some penis rings for it

If the problem is as my surgeon put it structural, there's very little that medication can do. That's when you search out alternatives and a TENS unit is a good distraction.

It's more for shoulder pain, at times it can be very debilitating at others it's fine, it's an erratic muscle that keeps knitting but so far no joy using conventional methods.

I am losing weight and getting fit but perversely that seems to be making it worse.

Lloyds Chemist do a reasonably priced one and some places rent them out. Worth asking for a referral to a pain management clinic.

Have you tried acupuncture? One of the few things that has worked well for me.

Chronic pain is debilitating

It's all fine and dandy getting fit but some exercise might actually be making it worse. Have you seen a physio?

They just refer your on, chuck pills at you, then tell you you need to come off said pills... It's a nightmare.

I just bought one from Amazon for my back/leg. Kind of helps when it's on, doing it's thing. I'll just look the the details up

Foam roller might help with that.

But it'll hurt

GP often use weight as an excuse not to do anything, anything that's wrong, try losing some weight! Never makes a difference. I wasn't overweight when my pain started, so it's irrelevant.

Hydrotherapy is really good if you can get a referral for that, I got one through the long term conditions team, who ran the pain management program.

Their hearts must sink when someone consults for chronic pain. One doctor said to me (probably in frustration) "can't you just soldier on"

I've given up and just put up with the constant pain. Having my wheelchair helps because it allows me to take the weight off my leg (which is what makes things worse) and I don't have to stand like a flamingo on the good leg (thus causing myself back and hip pain). However, the lack of an adapted house means no chair at home....

I tried TENS but didn't help my pain, unfortunately.

I use it for period pain. It definitely blocks out some of the pain and gives you something else to focus on and fizzle out eventually.

If you ever suffer from muscle/ligament/joint pai avoid visiting a GP (unless it's specifically for a referral). Always visit a physio instead.

And when the physio:

a) declines your referral OR

b) examines you and is completely baffled and says "can't help you" OR

c) tries to send you to a different type of physio who....... Back to a)

What does one do then?!

I only used one for giving birth but it felt more of an irritation than help. When Ive had mechanical issues the only thing that really helped was visiting the chiropractor and maybe some accupuncture. Sorting out the root cause of the pain would be better than trying to mask the pain obviously, but easier said than done. Hope it works for you.

Fuck knows. The only thing I haven't tried in the past five years is shooting myself in the head. It's been very tempting at times.

I use one and it was the cheapest one Amazon did as I was sceptical it worked but it did the job and it's still going strong after 4yr.

The sticky pads lost their stick but that's to be expected

Am guessing joint pain rather than muscular?

Nerve plus some joint stuff. Getting lovely new joint pain now due to overuse of the "good" leg and lack of adaptation to my home

Nah, it's not going to. 5yrs and no improvement - there's only about another 50-odd years to endure, right?!

Really does depend what your using a tens machine for in terms of pain is it acute or chronic and underlying cause?....

Community physio therapy referral from your go for assessment always a good place to start ! If appropriate physiotherapist can order you Athens machine
