London ULEZ

Evening all. Frequent driver in to London to watch West Ham (I’ll fight anyone who says anything lol). I usually park near the O2 and tube it in. With the new ULEZ coming into effect today, I’ve checked my vehicle reg and according to the site, the only charges I will pay is if I were to travel within the congestion charge zone. Am I reading it correctly? and if my car fell out of the ULEZ requirements, I’d also have to pay to drive outside the congestion zone?

I think I’m right, but if any London drivers with info know for certain, it would be appreciated

Its a pain the butt is what I know.

Totally understand the reasons for it and as a Londoner I probably will benefit from cleaner air But it is a charge a lot cannot afford.

" if my car fell out of the ULEZ requirements, I’d also have to pay to drive outside the congestion zone?

The congestion zone is anywhere within the north/south circular rds. If yr car didn't meet the requirements yr still ok to drive outside the zone but pay heftily if u enter it.

The congestion zone has not been extended that is completely different to the ULEZ.

Everybody pays the congestion charge regardless of the type of vehicle and also the ULEZ on top.

So If my car didn’t meet the criteria, I’d have to pay the ULEZ charge as well as congestion charge if I went into the city?

If you have a non compliant car are you drive-in to the congestion zone you pay I think it's nearly 30 quid.

Am I right in thinking that none of this applies to diesel trains, ships, generators or narrow boats? Should they be bound by the same rules and charges, after all it's the same fuel going in and the same fumes coming out, or have I got that wrong?

No because they usually carry multiple people and if we tax everything nobody will be able to get around anywhere.

That is and has for a while been in the congestion and ULEZ zone.

The congestion zone hasn't changed it's only been ULEZ that has been extended.

The problem is that punitive measures are put in place before things are accessible. They keep threatening the same sort of thing here in Manchester. I cannot get on a single train within a six/seven mile radius of my house, as stations are not accessible. If they put such charges in place here, I will no longer be able to afford to go to my job in the city centre. I will literally have to quit my job and all because I have the audacity to need a get from A to B on wheels.

Cycling? Doesn't help people like me. Walking? Same. Get public transport (right now) also deeply unhelpful. What are disabled people supposed to do in London now? They can't rely on the underground or overground trains - many stations are inaccessible.

I think many assume all blue badge holders qualify for Motability cars and that on a 3yr cycle, all badge holders will have newer cars by then. My car is a 2012 diesel. It's mine, I don't qualify for motability and I funded my own adaptations. I fund my own mobility equipment 100% - wheelchair, everything. I don't plan on getting a new car before 2025 unless mine dies completely. I can't afford to buy a car and to then pay for my own adaptation again.

That's why for now it is blue badge holders rather than mobility cars. I know some funding is available for certain qualifying people to get new cars but I don't know who qualifies as it's not something we need to look into. Totally agree though faddy is affecting the disabled and low income families the most. Something does have to be done about air quality particularly in London though it is a difficult situation.
