Women can be... what?

Is there an equivalent or its universal across all genders?

And why "cocky"?! What's the origin.

Cocky originally meant "lecherous," or lustful, but evolved to mean "arrogantly pert" in the 1700s.

I imagine it comes from the word cocksure.

Which I guess means to be as assured/confident as a cock.

But not a penis.

Maybe there just isn't one..because the assumption based on traditional gender stereotypes is that women don't get cocky but might be bitchy..

Yes.. cocky is also a playful word to an extent. Whilst bitchy not so much. Not to my ears.

If we are to take the derivation of cocky from “arrogantly pert” and assume that purely by the composition of the entire word containing the descriptor of both a male chicken and a slang term for a penis (making the word, by default, predisposed to describing a masculine behaviour) and then reverse the gender but apply the same rules we end up with:

Henny - which fulfils some of the rules but doesn’t equate to “arrogantly pert”. Further evolution of Henny is thus required. Refining a lazy generic insult for a male that is dominated by a more assertive (arrogant) woman “Hen Pecked” we end up with:

Henpecky.

However we haven’t dealt with the “pert” descriptor. Pert meaning “attractively lively, cheeky, small or well shaped.....

So given that cocky can be a tongue in cheek description of a loveable rogue and applying the rules from above with a gender slant we end up with

Bantampecky

You know when you start something and you wish you hadn’t?.........

I never get invited to parties.

Think bitchy implies gossip, and saying untruths. Cocky to me suggests blowing ones trumpet too much

The etymology of slang words is notoriously difficult to pin down ! I suspect the use of cock to mean penis and cocky as a derivative to denote strutting arrogance evolved together, and of course many languages associate animal features with human characteristics as they developed when most people were around domesticated animals such as cockerels (which btw don't have a penis!).

I don't see why cocky can't now be claimed for both sexes but I suppose a female equivalent could be 'impudent' which I believe developed from pundendae, the Latin for female genitals ?
