There sre two valves either side of the rad. Close them (clockwise) and unsrew the retaining nuts on the valves -you will need a pair of stillsons to undo them. Then lift the rad up, simples!

First thing I check is that it not a bypass rad, if rest of house on thermo values and that just Normal values then get plumber. On the whole usually ok but you need to lock down both sides of rad befor removing and then they still might leak

Only a rad full Refitting is a reverse of taking off BUT, before you open the valves you may have to put a bit more water pressure in the system (if it's a combi, fill vslve near boiler). Open up valves at bottom then open bleed valve to fill rad up and het the air out

The Plumb Centre sell a wonderful bit of kit to help drain rads dowm. It comprises of what is effectively a small tray and a platic 'chute' which wraps around the pipes and helps to guide the water from the rad into the tray (and if used correctly, not on your carpet).

Step 1 - close both valves on the rad - beware if they are old and shabby looking - sometimes once they are moved they begin to leak and you cannot stop them

Step 2 - attach the above mentioned kit around one of the up pipes

Step 3 - with an adjustable spanner, crack the nut open between the valve and the radiator- NOT the nut between the valve and the up pipe.

Step 4 - allow the water to slowly drain into the tray. Obviously the bigger the rad, the more water there will be inside.

Step 5 - Once your happy that all the water is out of the rad, loosen the nut completely until it seperates from the rad. (Do the same with the nut on the other end)

Step 6 - Once you are happy that both valves are free from the rad, simply lift it up and out of the way.

Tip!! - Turn the rad upside down as soon as you are able (so that the inlet and outlet spigots are at the top) This will prevent the remaining nasty black inky water from draining onto your floor / carpets.

Refitting is the reverse of removal. Once you have it all back together and tightened up, open both valves and follow the next steps:

Step 1 - Open the bleed screw at the top of the rad. If you have a gravity system it will fill up of it's own accord. Once water spurts from the bleed screw, your done. Nip it shut, check for any leaks then put your tools away, sit back with a smug look on your face.

Step 2 - ONLY if you have a combi boiler - open the valves as described in step 1, but you'll then have to go to your combi boiler, locate the filling loop (Usually the fill valves are located at the end of a thick silver braided flexible pipe - but not always!) Check the pressure gauge on your boiler after you've allowed the rad to fill, and if the pressure is less than about 1 bar (WHEN COLD) open the filling valves until it reads about 1.1 - 1.2bar then shut the valves and your done.

Dont forget the rad is full of water tho stick something under one of the valves and dont undo it all the way until the pressure is off
